Ursula, "put out the fire, urgently"; Kaliningrad was not chosen by accident

The European Commission, as reported by the "Times", will be asked to "mitigate" the situation after Lithuania blocked the transit of goods to the Russian enclave under EU sanctions after the suggestion from Brussels.
That is why Russia has threatened "seriously negative" consequences of sanctions aimed at transporting construction materials and some other resources, which Moscow described as "hostile action" by Lithuania and "blockade" of Kaliningrad.
The EU has so far remained committed to the issue, but senior diplomatic sources say Italy and some other European governments have asked EC President Ursula von der Leyen to "put out the fuse". "It is not about withdrawing, but about avoiding escalation. The EU is not trying to block Kaliningrad," the source said, as reported by Jutarnji list.
"We are in close contact with the Lithuanian authorities and will provide additional guidance on how to proceed," said one Commission official, stressing that customs checks on trains crossing Lithuania on their road to Kaliningrad would be "proportionate and effective". These new guidelines imply maintaining measures to check trains or trucks transporting goods in order to enforce sanctions, but now - in a significant change - they allow the movement of metal or construction materials if the goods are for Russia's domestic market, Kaliningrad is part of.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė has accused Moscow of propaganda lies over allegations of a railway blockade of Kaliningrad. "Lithuania adheres to the sanctions that the EU imposed on Russia due to the aggression and the war against Ukraine," she said.

One diplomat said that Lithuania, which is in the group of "hawks" for sanctions against Russia, together with Poland, deliberately "intensified" the checks, in order to put pressure on Moscow and force NATO to focus on defending its eastern wing before the summit of the alliance to be held next week.
By the way, Kliningrad is a Russian territory with about a million inhabitants located on the Baltic Sea, sandwiched between Lithuania and Poland. The city is the seat of Russia's Baltic Fleet, and the Suwa³ki Gap - a 100-kilometer corridor connecting Kaliningrad and Belarus, Russia's closest ally - is considered a potential focal point for new conflicts between the West and Russia.
"We need a much larger presence in the region," Šimonytė said, who will put strong pressure on Alliance leaders at the NATO summit next week, in order to increase the permanent presence of allied troops in the area.

Please don’t repeat that western diatribe about having no food or the cost of fuel is beyond the average citizen.
I have a little more understanding of what is going on in Russia than you. Inflation there is going down while in liberal democracies its sky rocketing. Here in Australia official inflation rate is 5.1% but it’s more like 12% to 13% and rising.
A friend lives in a wealthy part of London and she saw a huge que of people which snaked around a street corner waiting to go into a food bank. This was a 5-minute walk from her home.
Your deluded if you think that in a liberal democracy people don’t go hungry and Australia is no exception. This is 2022 not 1972 when things were fantastic.
The Russians try and avoid killing civilians and a TV group from France 24 interviewed people from Lysychansk yesterday when the Ukraine army wanted to evacuate them. One woman said the Russians were their friends and will not leave. This is French TV not RT!!!!
Talk about Geneva Convention I never heard our opposition on B92 say a word about that film where Ukrainian soldiers were shooting Russian POWs in the knees then executing them. I can only guess the convention does not apply in that case. The Red Cross has said that the Russians treat their POWs very well. So, I have no idea where you get this violation unless it was reported in the western press LOL.

Apologists for Putin such as sj have no idea what the people of Russia are going thru. He continues to live in the liberal democracy of Australia where he does not have to worry about when his next meal will come. His support for Putin shows he supports the killing of innocent civilians. sj never criticize Putin’s violations of the Geneva Convention.

Kaliningrad was chosen and it’s not accidental. What sanctions is Lithuania talking about? These are trains carrying goods and materials from one part of Russia to another and it’s in accord to a treaty signed by Lithuania 30 years ago. These goods are not for sale in any part of the EU.
I wish Russia would just turn of the gas and electricity to Lithuania and let Brussels work it out. Russia still does not understand that the only thing these clowns feel is pain. The west is run by utter buffoons; there is not one creditable leader in the west. Bobo is on the way out and Liz Truss is running around pretending that Great Britain matters stating they can help Africa transport grain from Ukraine. How? Using Captain Cook’s Endeavour? Sorry that at the bottom of the sea in Canada.
This comes from a person who did not know that Rostov is part of Russia not Ukraine. She is positioning herself to lead the UK. All I can say God help the Brits. First Bobo and now her.
