Saakashvili sees himself as "prisoner of war"

About 1,000 police officers guarded the court today, with about 200 Saakashvili supporters gathered outside, who tried but failed to break through a police cordon before the start of proceedings.

"I see myself as a prisoner, a war prisoner, not a detainee," he said, according to TASS.

Saakashvili was detained on Friday in Kiev on charges of joining forces with a Ukrainian businessman who has ties with Russia, in order to overthrow Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

Saakashvili has denied these accusations, while his lawyer said that the former Georgian president was on a hunger strike.
