Hague Tribunal President Carmel Agius says the behavior of Serbia regarding the extradition of SRS party officials is "a great cause for concern."

Hague president: Serbia's behavior great cause for concern

In an interview with the Sarajevo-based Oslobodjenje newspaper, Angius said that the three obstructed the trial of SRS leader Vojislav Seselj.

"Despite the court order for their arrest issued back in 2015, Serbia refuses to act upon it. Since then, the situation has only deteriorated," said Agius.

He noted that the UN Security Council has been informed about this in a report on cooperation of the countries of the Western Balkans with the Hague Tribunal.

Agius is convinced that the Hague Tribunal, which should cease to operate next year, has fulfilled its main task, because, as he said, it ensured the prosecution of those most responsible for war crimes committed during the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia.

The disappointment and the criticism, thinks Agius, come mainly because of a lack of understanding of the Tribunal's intended role, or because of unrealistic expectations.

"Unfortunately, during the year there have been serious misconceptions and misunderstandings especially in the region regarding the purpose and mandate of the court. I can only point out that the ICTY (Hague Tribunal), for example, never had a mandate to contribute to reconciliation in the region," said Agius.

He added that justice itself is not enough to ensure reconciliation, because that is a process that depends on the flow of time.

"The wounds are still open, and for those who survived the tragic events to move on is certainly not easy, but I am convinced that this is possible," said Agius.
