The Serbian government on Monday established the Council for Population Policy, headed by Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic.

Government establishes Council for Population Policy

"The council will be dealing with a pro-natalist policy, migration and the citizens' quality of life to ensure there as many of us as possible," said Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, a government minister in charge of population matters, and the council's deputy president.

Preparations for setting up the council were marked by controversy and misunderstandings regarding its objectives after media reports wrongly announced it would "fight abortion."

The idea is to work on the population policy without any encroachment upon the fundamental, constitutionally guaranteed rights of women to choose, said Djukic-Dejanovic.
