I do not know enough about 1389 to make a judgment on whether it is a day Serbia should or should not celebrate.
(pss, 1 July 2013 14:13)
=======================
You don't have to know enough or be convinced of anything because it is none of your business. It is Serbia's business only.
Anzac day is celebrated here in Australia and that was a HUGE defeat. So now tell us should Australia stop celebrating Anzac day and stop it being a public holiday?
You can remember your fallen and celebrate their bravery you know. Just because America doesn't do things a certain way doesn't make everyone else wrong.

Countries older than America, and there are a few, this type of defeat is considered as a rite of passage to true nationhood. However, in the you have Veterans Day and that is certainly celebrated.
(sj, 1 July 2013 13:36)
Yes we celebrate Veterans Day to honor all who have served our country in war and peace. We also celebrate Memorial Day for all who have given their life for America. But we do not celebrate Pearl Harbor Day as it is considered one of the saddest days of American history.
That was my point pure and simple, you used the wrong day as an analogy. I do not know enough about 1389 to make a judgment on whether it is a day Serbia should or should not celebrate.

This is what I have been saying – its gets bigger with the telling. How the mighty Croats forces defeated the entire Serb army. God helps with idiots like Lenard. The real problem is that Croats defeated no one ever. It’s a bone stuck in their throat that they can’t remove. Even when the cowardly Croats attacked their allies the Bosnaiks, these bunglers could not get even that right because the Bosniaks turned everything on the heads and were on the verge of wiping out the Croats in Bosnia. The Croats are only good for one thing – killing old men and women and defenceless people and that is why there is this burning in the chest trying to prove something against the Serbs.
“....13 Serb brigades defeated them. Croatians where on the outskirts of criminally occupied Banja Luka”
Capitan Fruit Cake, this was part of the withdrawal agreed in the Dayton Agreement not because of mighty Croats forces. I know it hurts you cannot defeat the Serbs and it always will – we are far superior to Croats whoas soldiers are only good at peeling potatoes in the kitchen.

"But pathetic Serb criminals where saved by U.S.A and Britain"
------------------

So the rag tag Serbs that were in control of a third of Croatia, for how long Lenny?, were actually saved from the Croatian military machine by being attacked and bombed by the US and UK. I suppose the bombardment of Serbian refugees by the US and UK (Gotovina was innocent??) was also for their own good.
The war is over, hopefully for ever, and soon enough also hopefully, the hundreds of thousands of ethnically cleansed Serbs will be able to return to their ancestral land and be compensated accordingly.
There were many Pathetic Armies that totally owe every bit of their 'victory', to the USA, UK and NATO, in ex YUG.
If it wasn't for the west's involvement there would be no Croatia, maybe just the province of Zagreb in Serbia. Croatians, Bosniaks and Albanians all showed the world how much of a match they were to Serbs in the years before foreign intervention,(ie. years of sanctions, media propaganda illegal recognitions , airstrikes and military aid), NO match at all!
all that aid, but still your beloved Banja Luka is the capital of Republica Srpska forever! how many of your brigades can change that Lenny Boy???

Uh, what: I have a choice between taking your word about what happened or reading through a whole range of different independent accounts from those with no axe to grind. Who am I going to believe? It could be argued that no war is 'won' because of the devastation that it usually wreaks on both sides.

Yes Lenny we have seen how brave croats and albanians were during the Balkan wars. Albanian terrorists were hiding in the woods while you "brave" croats were crying to Gentcher and the rest of the German political elite to help you against the big bad wolf, Serbia. Not to mention your cowardness during WW2 when you sided with Hitler when the allies fought back chetniks fled to Argentina, Canada and Australia. Without US intervention there would be no Serbia.
(MikeC, 28 June 2013 18:43) Just one Croatian 3rd echelon brigade http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Vukovar out numbered 20-1 stopt your communist/fascist chetnik Serbian criminal army on the border. Croatians with others also Serbs armed mostly with hunting rifles short on ammunition defending their town. Put the living fear in the Serbian communist/fascist army. So much that war mongering expansionist criminal Serbia gave up in fear scared its criminal forces will be totally destroyed in Croatia. Same in Bosnia when the Bosnian government asked the Croatians to put a end to minority murdering criminal Serb army. Only two elite Croatian brigades http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Mistral took on 13 Serb brigades defeated them. Croatians where on the outskirts of criminally occupied Banja Luka and minority Serb rebels criminal capital to deal a final blow to the criminals. But pathetic Serb criminals where saved by U.S.A and Britain now Bosnia suffers frozen conflict and justice for the mean time.

There is a huge difference in "celebrating" a day and "rememberance" of a day. You will see no celebrations of Pearl Harbor Day in the US. You will see memorializing the lives lost, and no one in the US considers Pearl Harbor Day as a day of victory or a reason for celebration.
It is not considered a "holiday".

Bottom line is it's a Serbian celebration of bravery of soldiers that layed down their lives against an Empire bent on conquering the world. I don't care what friggen religion you are, only heathens take pride in a vicious empire. For the record I have no issues with the croats, my grandmother was croat. Not every country had the will to stand up to Hitler, and the Croats have had their share of victories against the Turks. Serbs and Croats need to move forward.

Now as far as the Albanian people here taking pride, and reveling in the conquests of the Ottoman empire go. Do you find pride in the fact that the only reason you exist in Kosovo today is because the USA bailed you out? Keep in mind USA is the greatest ally of Israel. So technically the Jew lovers saved your butts. So next time you hypocritically point your fingers at Serbs while you sit in your homes and make racist comments toward the Jews just remember your only there because the Jews best friends kept you from being a fading memory.

Not true. Many countries celebrate losses. You have the US and Pearl Harbour then you have Australia, UK and New Zealand, they celebrate ANZAC day 25 April when their joint forces landed on Gallipoli in Turkey and several months later left in defeat.

Having read the usual assortment of 'my dad's bigger than your dad' type comments on this site (from the usual suspects) I decided to Google the battle in question and select six random responses and all stated that the Ottoman side won the battle. Is there a reason why Google would only post such responses or is it possible that these six, and no doubt others, have it right? Frankly it ought not to matter in 2013 but my experience of the Balkans tells me that it will continue to matter for years to come, at least to the Serb side. You are a proud independent country and should celebrate that fact (and keep it that way), not keep looking backwards. We celebrate the Battle of Britain but a) we won that and b) it was 'just' 70 years ago. I hope in my lifetime we will move on from that especially as those we fought with are now our partners.

The Ottomans continued to conquer most of the Balkans in the decade after that battle as if nothing had happened. They conquered Northern Greece, Bulgaria, sieged Constantinople and won against the last large crusade in 1396 in Nicopolis and reduced the Byzantine Empire to the area immediately surrounding Constantinople. What devastated the Ottomans and stopped their advance for a couple of decades were the Mongols in 1402, not something insignificant like Serbia which was just a vassal of the Ottomans after 1389. Both Albanians & Serbs continue to live these grandeur dreams as being them who stopped the Ottoman Empire from conquering Europe.

'The battle was also a major blow to the Ottoman campaign, and although the Ottomans did eventually take over most of the Balkans, it took them over a hundred years to do so. After the destruction of their forces at Kosovo, the Ottomans were forced to send inexperienced reserve armies to Europe. This problem was partly solved with the "recruitment" of Jannisaries from the Balkans. The delay in Ottoman advancement also effectively stopped the Ottomans from invading central and west Europe, as it gave time to central European nations to fortify and mount proper defenses.'

I love smacking down ignorant know nothings like Danilo. It's too easy Danilo, you are so thick and knowledge deficient that you can't even mount a proper defenense. You're a delusional self-hating retard.

The battle of Kosovo is a completely insignificant event in European history. Frankly, its a completely insignificant event for Serbia too, but it became mythologized in the 19th century to act as some sort of rallying cry against the Ottomans and of course to justify the conquest of Kosovo. Historians know only 2 things about this battle, that Lazar and Murad died. There's no evidence that Brankovic ever defected, there's no evidence that Milos Obilic was even a real historical character and all the oral traditions about it have their roots in poetry, written around 300 years after the event took place. Its nonsense to believe that it stopped Ottoman incursions into Europe, they conquered Serbia soon after, along with Greece and were on the outskirts of Vienna in the 17th century. Essentially what Serbs are commemorating is a myth that has been advanced by Serbian literature.

I don't know why such a proud people, such as Croatians are, don't commemorate any of these major historical victories,,, maybe because there are no such dates for Croatia to celebrate, because there was no such kingdom or empire in the first place, wasn't the region of Croatia always just part of a foreign empire?
That's why Croatia loved Hitler, he gave birth to their independence, they were a nation for the first time in their history, a fascist Nazi state that exterminated hundreds of thousands of civilians within the borders of their first official legitimate independent state. But that's all history, nothing you could be proud of, otherwise Croatia would be celebrating instead of laying wreaths at the site of their state sanctioned death camps.

It is not celebrating a loss, but a commemoration of a noble battle against significantly larger forces and remembering the dark centuries that followed as third a class, persecuted (particularly for their religion) and suppressed people within the Ottoman empire.

It was technically a draw. Ottoman forces suffered heavy losses and withdrew, returning years later. It is arguable that this delay gave the rest of Europe time and notice to preparewhere they were held on at the Gates of Vienna. The Serbs suffered such massive losses of men that when the Ottomans did return, they simply did not have enough manpower to resist effectively. The Ottomans, much larger by population did not have this problem.

A similar argument can be made when Hitler ordered the immediate invasion of Yugoslavia in a massive fit of rage. Barbarossa had been originally planned for May 15 at the earliest due to the usual spring floods which that year came late, and delayed to June 22 at the very latest. Hitler knew that Napoleon's late attacking of Russia was his undoing. Barbarossa was delayed by six critical weeks in part due to the weather and in part due to the large number of tanks used needed to be refitted and poor Balkans infrastructure. German historians estimate that the Yugoslav invasion may have been delayed Barbarossa by up to three weeks. It may not seem like much, but it removed Barbarossa's time buffer for other failings (i.e. German strategic blunders).

Happy Vidovdan to all, even to the resident self-hating Serb Danilo. Danilo obviously does not know what a 'Pyrrhic Victory' is. Look it up genius. The Turks suffered such heavy losses that it slowed them down and many say stopped their take over of the rest of Europe. You're an ignoramus and a tool, and really I don't get why you don't move your business to Zagreb or Tirana?? Oh, is it because you love to exploit cheap labour while spitting on the very people who are putting food on your table? Yeah, that's very noble of you, you immoral jerk-off. As for Danilo's brother in arms, Lenard, the historical revisionist who obviously got his educations from some Zagreb institution...lol. Yes Lenard, it's true that there were albanians who fought on the Serb side in 1389, but they were so miniscule in number, that they were insignificant! Furthermore, they all converted to islam and were loyal lapdog servants to the Turks, just like they were to Hitler, and just like your people were to Austria-Hungary, and to Hitler (and still are).

pre 10 godina

Now as far as the Albanian people here taking pride, and reveling in the conquests of the Ottoman empire go. Do you find pride in the fact that the only reason you exist in Kosovo today is because the USA bailed you out? Keep in mind USA is the greatest ally of Israel.

The delay in Ottoman advancement also effectively stopped the Ottomans from invading central and west Europe, as it gave time to central European nations to fortify and mount proper defenses.'

pre 10 godina

What difference does my name make!

I know it hurts you cannot defeat the Serbs and it always will – we are far superior to Croats whoas soldiers are only good at peeling potatoes in the kitchen.

pre 10 godina

You are very mad, you drove yourself right off-course :)

After June 28, 1389 Serbia was still free, so stop dodging the point. The battle of Kosovo was clearly won by the Serbs or else the Turks would’ve continued to advance into Serbia and NOT retreat back to Constantinople to rebuild for about 40Years and try again.

Who cares about the rest, Vidovdan is about Serbia and Serbs.

If battle for Kosovo (VIDOVDAN)is the most significant date and holiday for Serbia, then why did Serbia sell Kosovo and Serbs to Prishtinas criminal gang, just to join the sinking ship.Where is your PRIDE Serbia that I know your people have.Serbia stood up to Hitler and Croats who where allies with Germany what happend this time why is Serbia standing and watching Serbs being attacked everyday in Kosovo and doing nothing.

Countries older than America, and there are a few, this type of defeat is considered as a rite of passage to true nationhood. However, in the you have Veterans Day and that is certainly celebrated.

I do not know enough about 1389 to make a judgment on whether it is a day Serbia should or should not celebrate.

hahah clown. After the Battle of Kosovo Polje the Turks left retreated back to Constatinople, they did not continue in Serbia their army was destoryed, also they're Sultan was mkurdered. This is indeed a win for the Serbs. The Ottomans had the upper hand simply because they were able to rebuild faster that's it.

June 28 1389 marks the date of our battle not when we were invaded you morons.

uh, what?

Think for yourself. How was it a loss, when Serbia was still free decades after thr fact?

Uh, what: I have a choice between taking your word about what happened or reading through a whole range of different independent accounts from those with no axe to grind. Who am I going to believe? It could be argued that no war is 'won' because of the devastation that it usually wreaks on both sides.
