bganon,

O.K., let's say the MP seat belongs to party. That means party has 1) the right to change its MPs during the 4 year parliamentary term 2) mechanism to do this 3) the process is stipulated in party rules.

Is this the case with Serbian parties?

Peggy

pre 13 godina

Bganon, it's true that the party selects MPs and the leader and when people go out to vote they vote for the party and not the individual, but think they are voting for the leader, but there are also faceless men in those parties who do carry real power. At least that is how things usually work. I am not familiar with how it all works in Serbia though.
Now those faceless men can make deals and invite Jeremic to join. It doesn't have to be obvious or it can be as they can get numbers to support Jeremic. Dacic in that case would have no power to stop anything and since people love Jeremic it would not hurt the party to get Dacic's nose out of joint. It might help the party get votes.

Most people vote for the leader without giving this process any thought so any party willing to risk it might actually get a good payout.

A leader can win or lose an election for a party. I guess Serbia is not that much different in that to Australia.

Yes, Nikolic was lucky and had ready numbers in defection and Jeremic is obviously not that lucky. Another party is the answer and some leaders are already on the nose anyway that replacing them might not be as hard, after all those members want to get elected so if someone helps them get there they might not be as opposed to Jeremic jumping the queue.

Peggy I doubt its possible to do better than Nikolic has done politically speaking. Its a remarkable success story, true that some of us knew he (and the new party) would do well, but this was beyond all expectations.

Jeremic on the other hand has no party base which is very important. Ordinary people might like him, although he is far from a warm character, but party officials of all parties don't want him because he will expect to either be leader or deputy straight away. The best fit for him would be either SPS or DSS. He could lead DSS into the 21st century and push some modernisation while keeping the national element, but it would mean that Kostunica would have to step aside and others in DSS would be really annoyed at him coming in at the top. Dacic would be nervous of him if he came in to SPS.

Olli I don't know if DS like Jeremic having 2 paid jobs or not but I don't like it. This kind of thing happens too much in Serbia. But yes I think laws should be made along the lines you mentioned.
But this all touches on a serious issue that has been debated and legally changed in Serbia in recent years - does the mandate belong to the individual or the party? And this question is connected to the voting system - in a system of party lists where MPs are selected by the party and are not voted directly by the public eg first past the post, does the MP have the mandate or the party?

Olli

bganon,

So this is all about Vuk Jeremić having two paid jobs? New DS leaders don't like it? To me this is a proof that Serbian political and state governing systems still are immature. Serbian parliament could easily approve rule that if a PM for solid reasons (illnesses, accidents, pregnancies excluded) can't attend the legistative work for longer than let's say 10 months he/she will not receive the pay for this time. It's another issue if one is appointed to a more permanent job than 10 months or a year. Then it's normal in democracies that a PM gives up the seat in parliament.

Seat in the parliament is not a gift from a party. It's a position and duty given by the people. I guess each party has set rules about evicting a member. But parties can't touch seats of their MPs. They can remove a PM from their association but not remove him/her from the parliament. It's clear that Jeremić wanted to see the nature of the new DS leadership and waited for its move.

It's clear that the "old" DS landed flat on water. I'm afraid there's an amount of dirty laundry hidden somewhere -but for sure coming out sooner or later. So I stay waiting to see the true face of the new DS. The start isn't promising. If the new DS knows something of illegal activities of its party members the correct way to clean field is to deliver info to police. But does it have vision and courage to do that?

What more? Ah, it's a nice Sunday!

Isn't Cedomir Jovanovic actually a Roma? Many people have said that. Does anyone know his family history?

On the other hand throwing him out of the party is stupid really.
========================
Yes it is for he is their only draw card.
I have no doubt that Jeremic will land on his feet and whichever party picks him up will benefit, or he will do well forming his own party.

Nikolic deserted his own party and he did well (surprised) but Jeremic is more educated, more appealing and smarter so he will do better.

??? hmm, so you are accusing me of supporting Kostunica, Milosevic and Seselj? Or in fact are you the one that agrees with Albanian trolls?

And yes Albanian trolls will support whichever Serb politician does the worst for Serbia. Ordinary Albanians will realise that what is bad for Serbia isn't necessarily good for Albanians - at least some of the time.

But lets talk about Jeremic, frankly I dont see what business a man has in having 2 very well paid jobs at the same time. And why should members of parliament be able to never attend their workplace and do nothing while the rest of us have to work for a living? On the other hand throwing him out of the party is stupid really.

But both Jeremic and the Democratic Party are, for the time being at least, yesterdays news - so frankly who cares?

I support all individual's, that have the mentality of realism! It's not that I hate Serbs! I really don't, what I do hate is a Serb that thinks " he or they" will forcefully, achieve something against the will of the majority! Kosova, is a majority 90-95% Albanian population, which has made very clear, that Serbia will no longer have influence upon her or her population! It is very simple, for a person with a realistic sense to understand this, that is why I have respect for the likes of Z. Djinjic & Cedo! It's not that they are not patriotic for the Serbian cause? It's that they, are not patriotic for a cause that is un-realistic & un-achievable! Yes, 100 years ago it may have been possible, if one was militarily superior, but today with the age of democracy & freedom, and the guarantees that come with democracy and freedom, it simply won't happen! As soon as communism fell, all the injustices of the past just started unraveling, not just in former. Yugo, but around the world!!! Yes individuals with nationalistic tendencies will try a make a negative difference, but they will fail miserably & only cause more isolation to themselves & the people around them!
