LDP leader says president made “cardinal mistake”

President Tomislav Nikolić made a “cardinal mistake“ by saying he <a href="http://http://www.b92.net/eng/news/politics-article.php?yyyy=2012&mm=10&dd=13&nav_id=82637" class="text-link" target= "_blank">expects the EU to change the controversial formulation</a> about “Kosovo’s territorial integrity”.

on the contrary, methinks with Serbia outside the EU and disputing "Kosova"'s right to statehood, the EU would not admit "Kosova" period. Your "long shot" scenario for "Kosova" would then also translate to "no shot" from a practical point of view.

And with that "Kosova" can forget about joining too -- remember what the EU has been saying about not admitting new members with unresolved border issues because they don't want another Cyprus?

“If Kosovo gets to the point that it is slated to join before Serbia, then it will most likely be because Serbia has decided not to join, in which case, the EU won't care that much - it's internal border disputes that worry it. Croatia's border problem with a non-candidate Serbia and Estonia's undefined stretch of border with non-potential-candidate Russia didn't cause any problems in their applications, after all.
(Amer, 15 October 2012 11:26)”

Firstly, there are 5 EU members who have not recognized “Kosova” and I really doubt that they see its borders as “external”.

Moreover, and far more importantly, the dispute that we are talking here is Serbia’s claim over all of Kosovo as her province and not just over some little “stretch of border” as you naively put it. Russia may have a border dispute with Estonia but Russia does not dispute Estonia as a sovereign state. If Russia had claimed Estonia as her territory, I doubt the EU would so readily admit the Estonians.

My bet would be that Pristina can realistically hope to join the EU only after it has resolved its dispute with Serbia which is over its STATUS rather than over a mere "undefined stretch of border".

Still Romania in order to become EU member had to refuse any claim for non-candidate Moldova.

The damage has been done and it will take an other election to make Serbia solvent again. In the mean time nothing will change except maybe the reversal of visa free travel for Serbs. The Kosovo issue will remain in limbo and the economy will continue to suffer.

The duty of the President of Serbia is to demand changes of the formulations which are against interest of Serbia. That's no mistake. But Jovanovic will never be able to understand this.

This Cedomir clearly seems like he has common sense. He understands what needs to be done In-order to get Serbia moving in the right direction! It is very likely that Cedomir will be Serbia's next leader, either by a coup in a short period, or definatly by the next general Serbian elections... Good luck Cedomir, for the benefit of Serbia! She indeed needs real positive change!

I know that the Serbian government tells EU officials what the latter should love to hear when they meet (ie. that Serbia wants to join the EU). But given the deterioriating financial situation inside the EU itself, and that Nikolic himself has been commenting recently that Serbia is no longer (or should no longer be) rushing towards the EU, surely his message cannot be missed to even the most dense in Brussels -- that he doesn't have the hots for the EU the way his grovelling predecessor did.
