The talks between the coalitions led by the SPS and the DS parties to form a government have "hit a snag", DS-allied SDP leader Rasim Ljajić has admitted.

Reader yes the public has a short memory, but there are two other factors - there is a very serious danger for SPS now if no government is formed and repeat elections are held, if they are blamed by other parties, analysts and media and their vote would suffer.
The other factor was one I mentioned - that a SPS/SNS/G17 government might collapse early. One of the reasons G17 changed their name was that they had become toxic due to their destroying of governments and other failures. And what if they decided to bring down the next government with PUPS and JS (Palma), or with the help of one of SNS satellite parties? Its a fact that G17/URS have already lost 2 mandates, after they tore up an agreement they had with a party whose leader had talks with Tadic (Maja Gojkovic).

Yes SPS did seem like they would be reduced to scraping at the census level after tying their mast to the DS ship. However, they successfully managed to carry out the trick that has fooled Serbians a number of times - be in government and pretend to be in opposition at the same time. Kostunica's DSS carried out the same trick and had its most successful election result to date after being in government with DOS.

Return of Mira Markovic / Karic's etc, well perhaps, but not in any big way, G17 has not completely abandoned its past, SNS does not want the media on its back, or its new international 'friends'.

"Serbia did not ask the EU for squat, it was offered to them"

It was offered to them?! EU offered something that Serbia didn't want?!
I love this kind of statements. OK! Just have a look on Article 49 of the Treaty on European Union.
Any state that want to join the EU must APPLY and FULFILL CONDITIONS. But I think you were joking, you can't be serious I hope.

"the EU has little to offer the Balkans today"

So why Tadic, Dacic, Costunica and even Nicolic want to join EU?! (it means no serbian politician excluded)
Just DON'T APPLY to be member of. Easy! In this case no criteria to fulfill.

But, as it seams, Serbia (and all politicians of any colour) wants to be member of EU. This costs!

Italiano, Serbia did not ask the EU for squat, it was offered to them, and the West leaning politicians went that way. Do you not understand that it is all a political game that people in power play? That goes for Kosovo too, because you certainly sound more Albanian than Italian. In any case, stop trying to act smart, and try and do an "I gotcha". No one cares, what is important is, the EU has little to offer the Balkans today, yet they behave like they do, and the Western leading politicians act the same way too. What other game do they have for now?

"As I said on another thread, the best for all of us now would be for DS to pull out of plans for a future government completely and make a statement saying it is due to Dacic's political blackmail. This would weaken Dacic significantly in the eyes of the public.."

Agree with everything you said, except for the importance you seem to give to the eyes of the public on the decisions made at this point in time. The public is done for, it already voted, now it cannot do anything, it cannot influence what Dacic will do, nor what any of the others will do for that matter. The next elections are in 4 years, a long time from now. The public has a good property, short memory. there is a saying "the greatest wonder lasts only for three days", after that it is forgotten.

Even if this was not true, I remember four years ago a lot of people, me included, were saying SPS is dead politically, they made a deal with the DS, who were among those who overthrew them in 2000, who have completely different policies and blah blah blah, so Dacic will lose many voters. Guess what, it did not happen. Surprise. He may have lost some voters because of that move, but he seems to have gained many more, during 4 years.

Point is don't count on people who voted him feeling betrayed to influence Dacic. On the contrary, seeing their choice go to the top makes them winners too. Conclusion, Dacic will be Prime Minister of Serbia and his sponsors in the Partizan Football Club (some call them hooligans, but hey that will soon stop) who were partying with him the day after the elections will get some government positions, according to their need and greed. Not sure about Mira Markovic, she may even return and rebuild JUL, depending on who goes to the Justice ministry. Bright future ahead.

Chuchill also consumed more whiskey than his brain could manage. European politicians throughout history have had a scornful view of the people of the Balkans, yet could not help themselves in exploiting them.
I would recommend to the EU politicians today to get their own houses in order first, before they go offering salvation for the Balkans. Honestly, what can they possibly have to offer at this point, a promise?

Looks that's really going to happen. Postcomunists and postnazionalsocialists together. Wow!
Internal impact is highly connected to the foreign policy this government will lead. For sure!
Kosovo otions.
First scenario. Only these kind of coalition could get over and give up on Kosovo going forward into European integration having in the meantime great relationship with Russia. The DS can't change the role and be the next nationalist party on Kosovo. So, no benefits at all for DS and maybe a lot for Serbia and for LDP that will get some votes from DS delusional voters. Finally Serbia will have an European look and will help the other Balkan states to move on as well.

Worst case scenario. Nationalistic policy on Kosovo and no EU. Horrible relationship with EU/USA and an other Russian satellite as Belarus that are not considered democracies at all. DS could easily win next elections for sure with no need of Socialists. LDP even stronger.

Serbia is going to be really interesting for people that want to study politics or diplomacy.

Not really, in the end it will be sell-outs and sell-outs. I think the only party that has not visibly sold out is the DSS.

If you ask me, I think it is going to be an SNS + DS government once the SPS decides to backstab the DS. We just need to go through the motions.

No surprises here! Dacic is politically selling his services to the highest bidder, in another profession we know what this is called.

As I said on another thread, the best for all of us now would be for DS to pull out of plans for a future government completely and make a statement saying it is due to Dacic's political blackmail. This would weaken Dacic significantly in the eyes of the public and would help weaken Dacic's negotiation position with SNS - and SNS would be quite grateful for this (as would Serbia itself). DS would go into opposition and there would be a SNS/SPS/G17 government.

No, its not ideal, but things never are. Hopefully this government would do better than I believe they will, or at least they won't do any worse than the last one. If not then the new government may not last a full term, particularly with G17 as a political partner, with its famous record of bringing down governments.

anyone know the answer - be certain that a SNS government would not get rid of Jeremic, even if they could. Jeremic's credentials on Kosovo and the idea of a Serbian candidate in charge of that organisation is exactly the image SNS is trying to project. It would be very important to a future SNS government to have success on the international sphere, as this is where people are expecting them to come unstuck.

It remains for DS to do the right thing and force Dacic's hand. The outside bet is that DS and SNS get so fed up with Dacic they make their own government.
