Italian FM says Serbia should get candidate status

Italy's Foreign Minister Franco Frattini believes Serbia should get the EU candidate status and a date for the start of accession negotiations by year's end.

Italy takes over the last of the traditional EU Presidencies in 2014 just before the role becomes a shadow. Until then, only itty, bitty states will have the presidency with the helping hand of one or more traditional members - a bit like when a small country wins the Eurovision and cannot fund it, several big members cover the cost.
