As a Serb I welcome this news. The EU is not for our proud people. Look to mother Russia!
(MikeC, 20 March 2011 14:48)

good lord... what on earth has russia done for serbia?

it is utterly idiotic for serbia to alienate themselves from europe... russia does NOTHING for serbia.

mother russia gives serbia impotent lipservice, that serbia purchased by throwing away its energy future dirt cheap. It enjoys the indignity of receiving loans the serb taxpayer can pay back..so serbia can better maintain infrastructure to service russian customers in the west.

"mother russia" does nothing for serbia, simply pats these "proud people" on the head, stokes its nationalists delusions and russia maintains its only remaining lackey.

Tomislav Nikolić and the SNS are just as pro-EU as the current government. And the 'threat' of Serbia seeking closer relations with Russia is not something that will impress Brussels.

Serbia's failure to deliver on its promise to arrest Ratko Mladić raises the question whether the Tadić government is fully in control of its security services. EU membership has to be earned.

For goodness sake, how long will it take before someone realises that Mladic isnt in Serbia, they would of caught him, He'd be in an obscure location no one would believe him to be in, the far outstretches of Russia, the falklands, Argentina or New Zealand (the later most likely).

I think its also certain that the EU is inevitable for Serbia unless the population decides otherwise, which is quite likely, considering the EU is going down, while Russia is rising, theres also the Moral question of joining an organisation whose members illegally bombed Serbia killing hundreds of civilians just for their own interests. Russia on the other hand supported Serbia through thick and thin.

What Serbia really needs is the middle point, bread buttered on both sides, that solution is called Tomislav Nikolic. Early elections please.

"MikeC if you were a 'smart' Serb you would look neither to Russia or the EU.

What is it with you people and taking sides other than your own?"

Because most Serbs, unfortunately, have a very adolescent outlook on life that can be basically surmised like this: "some powerful, benevolent entity will descend on us and all will be fixed"

People think they are arguing with eachother by interchanging "EU" and "Russia" for that powerful entity, but they don't realize that they're both just expressing the same childish outlook on life.

This also manifests it's way in many other ways from "Investors will come" or, individually, how they expect to be treated by an employer.

Personally, I ascribe a good portion to this as a legacy of communism.

"If Serbia does not become an eu candidate this year, then it's goodbye to their boy boris clooney and his ds party."

Isn't time up for Boris in less than a year anyway - don't Serbia limit the President to 2 terms?

Actually it is remarkably simple and hardly warrants all the below comments. The EU steadfastly refused to give Croatia candidate status until Gotovian was handed over. All the while Croatia pretended it knew nothing of his whereabouts, but finally came up with him. For Serbia it is the same deal - Mladic. Why should you have it sweeter?

-"How High?"

Oink oink! They don't give away all that brussels pork for nothing! Bxl has got even tougher with Zagreb ("Danke Deutschland" indeed.

There really is no need for Belgrade to rush, unless of course those who wish to be re-elected are deliberately lying to their own citizens. Never!

South stream may not even be a reality for Serbia and if it is, it will help the economy but will not fix the economy and definitely not make Serbia rich.
Note, Ukraine does not even make enough to pay their energy costs.
All those countries you mentioned spent 20 years getting away from Serbia, don't expect any to bowing down in the future.

Who could doubt ? I bet only threat of closer relations with Russia and election of Tomislav may force them to change their mind. The question is if Serbia really needs membership with the depredating EU.

Yes, Mr. Degert, show Serbs how to be like you all in the Euro Club. enlighten us with your supreme liberal cultural, which is not really liberal in the literal sense. I am glad to know that the real Serbs who have not fallen for all the hot air floating in from Brussels, or fallen asleep under the hypnotic trance of Western materialism and anti-national/anti-God ideas, will continue to form the majority of Serbia's population and not be "reformed".

Nonsense Alex, the criteria for EU does not include nationalism and I am not persuaded that Belgrade suffers from any more nationalism than Zagreb, Pristina or Podgorica. And the former is an official candidate.

But its good (and sad) that it takes an outsider to tell the Serbian people the truth about what Serbian politicians are saying.

Then again Serbians know that their politicians have a habit of lying through their teeth.

If they seriously keep us out then we should use S.Stream revenue as leverage to revive YU as an economic bloc, invest in domestic commerce and slowly break down borders. Euro-scepticism & Yugo-nostalgia are high in MK & CRO as B92 reported and CG & BiH have large enough Serb populations that we can reverse disintegration very quickly. If we DONT get in the EU, it means that the EU is under the control of the Arab oil sheikhs just like the US with its Muslim president. Weak Westerners

Alex

This is not a surprise. Serbia's interfering in Bosnia & Herzegovina and Kosovo combined with an absence of the rule of law and genuinely democratic, accountable institutions will ensure it remains on periphery of Europe for many years to come. Virulent nationalism and chauvinist attitudes remain undiminished for a large section of a confused population
