"Do you really think the Russians would agree to a situation where the number of US nukes seriously exceeded the number the Russians have? The US has [link]#cite_ref-nuclearweapons1_2-0 (before this latest treaty is implemented) 2,468 activated and 9,600 total warheads; the Russian have 4,650 activated vs 12,000 total."

Your statistics, obviously from wikipedia, is not universally accepted. There are other sources which put the Yankees ahead in numbers, for instance http://www.cdi.org/nuclear/database/nukestab.html

My point that if Obama truly wants to have a nuke free world, the cuts must begin with his own arsenal in view of their numbers. He has not shown any intention of doing that however.

"Between them, the Russians and the Americans hold about 90% of all the nuclear weapons in the world, but it's hard to persuade those holding smaller numbers to disarm unless the two major nuclear powers go first. Since the Russian weapons are deteriorating, all the US had to do was sit back and wait for the numbers of Russian (usable) weapons to decline naturally, if they wanted to improve their relative position; this treaty means the US will be giving up usable weapons in exchange for trash, but it's still a good deal if what you want to do is reduce the total number of the damn things in the world.

The Yankees may be better able to upkeep their nukes compared with the Russians, but I won't be surprised if the costs involved contributed in no more way to the US humongous debt situation today. http://www.federalbudget.com/ Which may be real reason for Obama's current enthusiasm to have a world with less nukes.

"This is real rich coming from the Yankees who possess far more nukes than any other country in the world! If Obama is really sincere, he would have started dismantling the Yankee nuclear arsenal already. Words are cheap and easy, but its action that counts!

"The U.S. administration has touted the treaty as a key element to improving ties with Moscow, as well as a major step in U.S. President Barack Obama's vision of a world free of atomic weapons. "
