There is one thing that you all are overlooking that there are strong Croatian and Hungarian influences in the Wilders party. They will allow for enlargement with
Croatia, the German 7 Austro-Hungarian wish. Let see whether Serb diplomacy can unmask the new liabilities of Dutch Government. In the mean time reality is: only strong reforms in Serbia can make her enter the EU in 2015.

The irony of it all is that when Serbs were fighting the muslems, Holland really cried out lout. Now, Holland has a new coalition government with a party which is anti-muslem. But don't expect anything from them because that party is also anti-EU, or at least anti enlargement. Then of course there is Maxime Verhagen, not a friend of Serbia. His party got annihilated during the elections but still they are in the government.

@winston, 9 October 2010 17:05
Oh please, there were a few countries that were worse than Holland as a colonial power. Numero uno is of course the UK, followed by Spain. Don't rule out France. And it all happened a looooong time ago.

For all those whining about South Africa: Holland was one of the strongest opponents of the apartheid regime.
Apartheid might be an invention of Dutch descendents but do you know who invented the concentration camp? It were the British when they interned the women and children of Boers and killed most of them.

If you expect the new Dutch government to act reasonable and rational and stop blocking the Serbian candidate membership of the EU then consider some historic facts.
The Dutch lost face when Mladic took Srebenica and massacred the majority of the male population. There was once a Dutch journalist who crossed the then foreign minister (later secretary-general of the NATO) Luns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Luns). The Dutch government and civil servants working for them made life impossible for this man (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willem_Oltmans) for 47 years.
Another man working for the Dutch Defense ministry (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Spijkers) didn't want to lie to a widow that her husband being killed by a mine was his own fault but more likely due to a design flaw. Since 1984 he was persecuted by the ministry of Defence and it was shown that the ministry had been telling lies to everybody including the parliament for 18 years.
Mr. Verhagen's boss and party member in the outgoing government mr. Balkenende (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Peter_Balkenende) was one of the people responsible for sending the Dutch army to Irak in the second Gulf war. This was justified with the same nonsense arguments the USA and Great-Britain used (weapons of mass destruction and capability to fire them off in 30 minutes).
Years later it came to light that mr. Balkende and others had been explicitly warned by their own intelligence people that these arguments were unlikely to be true and legally they would be committing a crime to go to war. To date they keep lying about being told that. There would also be no connection about Holland going to war and then foreign minister and party member Jaap de Hoop Scheffer later becoming secretary-general of the NATO.
The now outgoing government fell because mr. Verhagen and mr. Balkende didn't want to keep the solemn promise they made that the Dutch army fighting in Afghanistan would leave in 2010. Mr. Verhagen's party lost a lot of parliament seats in the following election so it would stand to reason that the Dutch people didn't like his stance.
Now mr. Verhagen and his party will return in the new government because their minority coalitian with the VVD made a deal with a non-democratic party (the PVV) led my mr. Geert Wilders. Wilders is the only member of the PVV because then he doesn't have to listen to any other people - this is a fact, he is the only party member. The PVV's only real agenda appears to be a rabiate anti-moslem point of view. So for staying in power mr. Verhagen has no problem making deals with a right-wing nutcase like Wilders whose ideas are considered fascist by many including scholars.

So can we rely on the Dutch being reasonable and rational on the subject of Serbian's candidacy for the EU? Probably they will need to be forced to give in by other EU-member states.

Well the Dutch are really upset with Serbia and Serbs in general. Serbia played them as fools during the 1990s. When the Dutch wanted to send some tanks to defend Srebrenica before the genocide Serbia said you have to pay us millions because our roads will be damage. The Dutch payed it then the Serbs said we need more and many other happenings that Serbs tried to make that they were idiots. Now the Dutch remember how the Serbs and Serbia treated them Serbia has very little support of any kind in Holland. Now they will pay hard ball with Serbia.

This "no alternative to EU" is a dud policy. When are people going to wake up? Handing over Mladic will not be enough. Recognising Kosovo will not be enough. They want it all, Serbia to also be a subservient country that joins NATO and sends our sons and daughters to fight and die in their wars. Now, if we can demonstrate such loyalty, then and only then will they consider getting us into unsustainable debt and joining their family.

There are people like you in the EU, Hruz. That is a perfect reason to not join this decrepit, self-serving Union. The Dutch hid like cowards in Srebrenica, and did not do the job they were placed to do there, they hid from Mladic - now, they act all self righteous. This country has the most brutal colonialist history of any European country, just ask the South Africans, for one.

Zoran

The Netherlands seems unrelenting. All EU countries have already agreed that Serbian request for EU candidacy should be submitted to the European Commission, which would then prepare an opinion, but without support of The Hague this will not mean much for Serbia.

Holand the most hypocritical country in Europe. Is pinpointing at other countries, but there is an extremist elected in the government. This person, called wilders will not give any green light for an enlargement of the EU. Then there is Verhagen, the new vice president. You all know him, he is the guy who was fighting against the Sebian membership of the EU all the time. Because of the Hague tribunal. Well what can I say, the dutch government is one what will lick it's way up and then kick towards smaller counrties. But Holland should be in the Hague tribunal as well. Thanks to it's misconduct in Indonesia in the 50's. But according to the rules of the UN court those acts (huge crimes against humanity) are committed 55 years ago and there are no grounds anymore to handle this case. But in Holland there is a law, when someone committed a murder, the person can always been indicted even after 80 years. So... very hypocritical...
And I'm living in this country....
