Rising poverty is not just an issue for Serbia to contend with, but the entire world and in particular the US. If you think Serbia is getting bad, the US has an unemployment rate of 26% and some its academic are now using the D word. Its poor totals 60/70 million out of a population of 300 million and some of its cities resemble a third world country in Africa.

Rising cost of living is also an issue that all countries on this planet have to grapple with. It is true that under Milosevic food was plentiful and homelessness was not an issue, but under freedom and democracy, and privatisation occurs where your most valuable assets are sold for peanuts under the pretext of private companies can do things better than the Government. I can tell you that is the greatest load of rubbish under the sun. Private companies buy an asset then only keep the viable part and the rest is closed, employees sacked and assets sold.

Free market is another word for a free for all with no holds bared – look at what happened to the US, technically it is now bankrupt with Chinese investment. China now owns 1/3 of the US and that percentage is growing. I’m sure Ronny Regan is spin in his grave.

The current Government in Serbia is there to privatise as much as possible. That is its purpose. The only way out is too elect other politicians that are not as westernised as the current group and you might have a chance to escape the path of increased poverty.

And now we know why Tadic etc yell "Kosovo, Kosovo" every 5 seconds, to distract

Even on this tragic news for so many people, in Serbia and around the world you manage to come out with your senseless nationalist comments.

You are so desesparate to have negative news on Serbia that I wouldn't be surprised that you would sell your mother for it!

ARTa that's Kostunica your talking about. Tadic isn't at all focused on the Kosovo issued.

But I guess your endorsing Kostunica with your ridicolous criticism of Tadic.

"We also need to question how we calculate poverty. Is it just the amount of money that we make? What about happiness?"

Measure poverty in happiness?!? Are you kidding me?! I don't think you would be too hapy if you don't have money to eat!

Poverty increased everywhere because of the global recession. This is not a specific issue to Serbia. You'd think by losing Kosovo the poverty rate would have gone down....

Eh, it's not just poverty that we should think about. There are other things too. Income inequality for example? How many years in a row has that increased or decreased? We also need to question how we calculate poverty. Is it just the amount of money that we make? What about happiness?

Perhaps the rule of Slobodan Milosevic was not so bad after all! At least people had food. How come when there are no longer sanctions against our country, an increase in investments, free market economy etc etc etc more and more people are getting less? Pretty soon we'll be as poor as Albania and Somalia.
