Scary picture of Russia, based on armchair reading. If the politicians do rely on such "analysts" and these are obviously well-paid for such meaningful articles, that is the most scary thing.

My picture of Russia is very complex and the list of what is wrong there is indeed long.

But this article managed to consist of sentences where I object EVERY SINGLE sentence of it. It is quite an "achievement".

To say the truth, the author - probably in al honesty - tried as many before to explain, what Russia is. He failed badly like many before him.

I don't even try such thing because it is impossible. Just accept it: there is a fairly large, controversal country spreading over a good part of Europe + Asia which generates a lot of emotions and where everything and it's opposite is true.

The only closest thing on the planet to that country is called "United States of America". ;-)

In Russia, we have same type of articles/experts/human rights activists/Putin criticisers and others, others, others who teach us what to think about our history, politics, life.
We also have paid killers, who kill unknown jurnalists to blame it on regime, some ex-KGB traitor who was killed by MI-6 in London to blame it on again Russian(!?) regime.

So I should stop being surprised to see such articles even on b92.

John Wills: “They have sovereignty and the US doesn’t own it.”

What is sovereignty? It is a tool not a goal. It was adopted in 1648 when it became clear that there would be no return to a universal Catholic Church in W. Europe. So there was going to be a co-existence of RULERS of different religions. The principle “Cuios regio, eios religio” – whoever holds the power determines the religion became dominant. Every ruler was free to do with its subjects whatever he or she wanted as long as he or she did not violate the “internationally recognized borders”. In the modern globalized world this principle is no longer applicable. For good or for ill a new “universal religion” of human rights has become a reality. So the upcoming conflict is bound to be between the “sovereign states and the intertwined globalized capitalist system of the USA, EU and others.

At university we took a course called clear thinking, where one learns basic logic as well as what constitutes a logical fallacy.

This article has most of the logical fallacies in it, which is quite remarkable.

The notion that Russia has a "Authoritative System" is outrageous.

Russia has elections. And according to the US based gallop poll the ruling party has a very high opinion rating. This contrasts greatly with the US backed colour revolutions in Ukraine who's leader has a single digit rating. Russian media is as free as the US media. How many times have you seen Raplph Nader on CNN? its back or white , republican or democrat .. who happen to form foreign policy from the same think tanks and global architects. So if the US and EU are democratic... well Russia is even more democratic. And if Russia is totalitarian (love it how b92 uses brezinsky coined terms) then the US is a NAZI state.

2/ Russians choose both parliament and their president unlike many "Democratic" nations

You see Democratic means something else all together when you look at the evidence.

We have democratic Ukraine, Georgia who's democracy came through revolution?? and some of these governments have opinion ratings below %5. Oh and lets not forget Iraq and Afganistan, Latvia, Estonia...

And then we have non - democratic countries like Russia who do have elections, who have governments that represent the people yet they are not democratic why? The answer is obvious ..sovereignty. They have sovereignty and the US doesnt own it. That's it. So Serbia being called democratic by Us is very concerning because it means serbia does not have sovereignty. Think what you want about Milosevic, but the reason NATO was after him was not because of his corruption, but because the state he was running refused to give it sovereignty away.

On top on that Russia is now in front Of the west 10-15 years on all other issues..and the gap will be bigger with every past year. Russia state is a dream state for the all west by all means and from 2020-2030 will become best state to live on and a most richer state in the world! You wont see probable never someone as Yeltsin-what west wish. Russia is world for themself and also a leader of the free world and as such death treath to all Nato fashist from the west(did you forgot west bombings with more than 7000 inocent victims)..Wake up Serbia or you wont see a big pitt-a grave-in front of yours legs witch west digg on purpose to inslave you forever...Your right place always was and always will be on the east side.I must say-your text do not fit the truth in today reality and indeed is a complete FAKE!

This, of course, is a wishful thinking of the West, who would love to grab the national resources of Russia, what almost happened during Yeltsin. Fortunately for Russia, emerged Putin who shows every sign to become as great as Peter the Great. Compared to him western leaders (Bush, Blair, Brown, Sarkozy)look pretty insignificant. There is no doubt that Russia under Putin is destined to a much greater role in World affairs.(Fortunately for the Serbs).

There is an old saying that Russia may be not as strong as it seams, but is never as weak as it seams! A nation that crushed Napoleon and Hitler at the peak of their strength is unlikely to kneel in front of a foreign ruler. Maintaining such a huge landmass may be expensive, but it also contains more natural resources than any other country! So under a wise leadership with a fraction of the earnings coming from the export of the natural resources a fine modern infrastructure could be built. And in the day of ballistic rockets and nuclear weapons a reasonably cheap defensive system could be built. Russia simply does not need huge armies to stop an eventual invader. It could deter him with HI tech. So is Putin a solution or a drawback? His style is defiantly a hindrance! Facing a rising China on its empty Easter border and an assertive Muslim world (with a Muslim population settled on a wedge between the bulk of the Russian population in European Russia and Siberia –where most of the natural resources lay) it is unwise, to say the least to challenge the West. May be a post Cold War minded leader would realize that a strong Western presence in the Baltic lands and even in Georgia may add to the Russian security, not weaken it!

That is a very passionate piece by the pro-Biden STRATFOR. However, you have forgotten that the Russian people and state has survived a lot more tests than the American. Let's see how things go.
