In all the honesty I believe that Jeremic is one of the best Serbia has.
Also I would say the hardest working foreign minister I have ever seen.
I have said also that I actually wished our foreign minister is only as half as good as this guy is.
Unfortunately with hard work comes the frustration of the obstacles.
The path taken by Serbia (same as it has always been) will hinder any politician trying to fight for Serbia’s interests. We see this kind of reaction from him in occasions (as it was when he recalled Ambassador’s stupidly just to send them back).
Serbia is in a crossroad with both directions raising questions.
Does it take the European path or does it looks east to Mother Russia?
Both paths have the positives and negatives.
1. Let’s assume that Serbia looks East towards Russia. The economical perspective and business possibilities are very limited (as we know to date everybody that has dealt with Russia/USSR has ended up short changed). Also this will distance Serbia even further from the rest of Europe, and lets face it Serbia is positioned fairly central in Europe. It will keep the existing Russian support, but is it worth sacrificing the countries economy?
2. Serbia takes the European path. The assistance that Serbia has will deteriorate. Also Serbia must convince the anti-European and anti-US politicians that this is the only way forward. And finally, Serbia must accept the Kosovo reality. But the reward is of the economical nature. Serbia can benefit from the geographical position it has in Balkans and become a link between the other Balkan states (unfortunately Kosovo being one of them). Thast is a very good position to be (skim a bit from every deal that comes around – basically licence to print money). Longer it takes Serbia to acknowledge this harder will it be in the future as the other Balkan states might take that strategically important position.
So now, what do the do???
Do we go left or right, that is the million dollar question.
And it is true though, Serbia has never and will never trust NATO.
At the same time NATO has not and will never trust Serbia.
The Serbia-Russia brotherhood is to strong for that to happen ever.
