Ben my friend, thanks for the help on the post :) If you know so much about the subject surely you must know that Kosova is not a place at all. I was refering to Kosovo so maybe we aren't talking about the same situation. Anyway all jokes aside if we are to base all of our decisions on the constitution of 1974, then we must only recognize the six federal republics as it clearly states in the constitution that only the six republics had a option of seceding so let's recap them for people that are a little slow they are 1.Slovenia, 2. Croatia, 3. Serbia, 4. Bosnia, 5. Montendegro, and 6. Macedonia. Now clearly we can see that Kosovo and RS are not apart of that list. That was the Western stance during the 90's. Serbs in Croatia and Bosnia, had to be apart of that new nation regardless of how high their populations where in certain areas. That is how it ended am I right? Now 15 years later we tell Kosovo not Kosova that it can break free. We have broken that stance and that logic and went against everything we said in the 90's. So now with Kosovo being in play all of a sudden ALL of the secesionist movements are in play as well and believe me they will all use Kosovo as leverage and Russia already has. Kosovo is possibly the biggest mistake of the Bush administration and that is saying a lot. Serbia will retain it's territorial integrity it is just a matter of time before the "independent" nation of Kosovo ceases to exist!

Chris the most interesting thing in your post is your remarks on my grammar.

You as a knowledgeable c[C]hristisn a[A]merican cannot ignore the most important part of my post: no Serb or pro-Serb is commenting the trail of the six in Hague. Now when you qualify your self as knowledgeable + c[C]hristian you have double moral obligations NOT to overfly at this important issue. But you do- why??

Regarding the RS issue my "ignorance" tales me that all succeeding states of former Yugo (including Kosova) declared their independence based on the constitution of 1974.

Would you be so kind as knowledgeable c[C]hristian a[A]merican and enlighten me where in that constitution APPEARS Republica Srpska????

If it did why there was the need for war, and Dayton????

When you give yourself attributes than the expectations on you are higher.

SP, Yes it is cowardice and the reality is that US will not risk a war with Russia.
Well, no more than Russia will risk a war with US. They both know their limitations and strengths and there is no danger in either one intervening.

And yes, you can call it cowardice because they had no problem attacking Iraq, Serbia or Afghanistan. They knew that these attacks will not be against worthy opponenets. What else would you call it? I call it a bully picking on a weak guy and robbing him. Translation, coward.

I am well aware of the consequences of a nuclear war and that's why I am fairly certain that when push comes to shove Russia and the US will sort something out in the long run and Kosovo or Georgia will have nothing to say about it.

Ben, Your post needs major reonstruction. Let's leave the horrible grammar aside for a second and get to the main problem at no point did you support any of your claims. If you had read up on the dissolution of Yugoslavia you would know that Republic of Srpska was formed before the war in Bosnia broke out. You would also understand that Serbs where kicked out of their homes too. Look at the Serb population of Sarajevo now maybe about 10% pre-war it was around 40%. That's a huge drop but why is this never mentioned? Why don't we talk about towns like Zenica, Tuzla or other towns where Serbs fled? No war is ever clear cut Serbs where treated just as bad by the Muslims and Croatians it's just in politics there alway's has to be a scapegoat and sadly the west choose to betray it's long time ally and put all the blame for the war on the serbs and Serbia. I can say that we lost a great friend in Serbia and one day hopefully after they retain their land and image which was wrongfully tarnished by lies and propoganda we can have leaders who try and help our relations. Serbian friends knowledgeable christian americans are with you and hope to once again have great relations. I offer my hand in friendship. Hvala!

You make some interesting points, but no country in the Balkans would like this. If that were to happen then there is going to be about 20 25 countries in the Balkans cause you missed another 10 places that have their "problems".

The best answer in my opinion is bringing back Jugoslavia in a Democratic form and copy the USA model. Make Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, RS, RSK, Kosovo, etc... all states like the 50 states in the USA. They will have more power in Europe economically, military wise, and most importantantly they would have almost the same influence as Germany, France, and Spain in the EU.

I think Serbs in N Kosova have better case o join Serbia than RS.

Leposavic, Zubin Potok but not Mitrovica have been part of Serbia so they could go back nd swap for Preseva valley.

RS is a monster creation- product of ethnic cleansing. Abkhazia as well but not SO @ Jan, DK

US and EU already did a HUGE mistake to LEGITIMISE this MONSTER in Dayton. Now Serbs instead of being grateful to US and EU they alley with Russians!

Everyone in teh former YU was warning the west that any form of compromise with Serbs (Dayton) will be perceived by Serbs as weakness of the west ans and not as a good will- the western never took this warning seriously and here we are RS and Serbia in the hands of Russia again.

And the story goes one, now Serbia Gov.t will be bit more close towards the EU position in respect with Russia, Kostunica in other side will continua to swear love to eternity to Russia… but no one in Serbia will ever look with honesty to the atrocities that they committed in the 90s to their neighbours. The trail of the six for the crimes in Kosova today has ended but NO SERB is posting any comment there- simply it is ignored nothing happened those who post are in the tunnel of the paranoia of the world complot against Serbia- the hysteria continua, the lies survive and become “truth” and as always no real and durable peace can be seen…

The solution is, called it amputation if you prefer, a complete separation of the former Ygo nations form the “martyr” Serbia . as a matter a fact only in Serbia is yet felt strongly the nostalgia of the ex YGO other are happy. This says volums... at least to me

Peggy,
I take it that you think US resistance to going to war with Russia is some sort of cowardice. Do you really comprehend what a true war between Russia and the US really would mean.
Russia knows which buttons that are safe to push, they are no more eager to go to war with the US than vice versa.
If not, to prove their point would not their military action have taken place in Kosovo where they have lost face, not in a region they ultimately control.
Whether you erroneously believe that Russia is suddenly the omnipotent military leader of the world is irrelevant. Any war between the two would result in the use of nuclear weapons at some point, the true judgement day.

I am interested to know the Serb point of view on a possible scenario. If say in the future there is agreement in the table where Abkhazia, Ossetia, Kosova and RS are offered to be full independent members of the UN. What is the Serb take on that?

Well here's a newsflash(sorry :) Dodik is not a very nice guy. i mean you will have to read between the lines to see what i mean, because if i am direct and frank, my dear email comment might just suddenly "disappear" (funny how these things happen...)

anyway, dodik is not very nice, and what he has done in your beloved RS is not so very nice. many people in bosnia are suffering (can anyone guess why?) but as my frnd, who just returned from there, reports: those living in RS are the worst off (except for the wealthy elite, of course.) so someone was sold a bill of goods, and don't anyone believe that rs will one day become united with serbia, which is a foreign country, thank you very much.

now, our frnd branko who is a prominent RS human rights activist, is currently in hiding, as he reported to us over the phone just a few weeks ago, to my pointed dismay. such is the nasty atmosphere in RS, which dodik keeps going, for all of his special reasons.

and this foto of dodik that you guys and gals are running -- give me a break! it looks like a site for his reelection campaign, except guess what? there is no democratic opposition in RS.

thank you.

The unilateral declaration of independence by the Kosovo Albanians has set the current precedents that the world is grappling with.

An opportunuity now exists for northern Kosovo and Republika Srpska to declare independence and reunify with Serbia. I am sure the Croat cantons of the Federation of BiH will passionately desire this also. With the peaceful partitioning of Kosovo and Bosnia can the region as a whole move forward and embrace prosperity and finally end the failed artifical state that Bosnia has become and what Kosovo is trying to be turned into.

@EA - unfortunately I can not agree with you.

It is probably true, that Kosovo versus Abchazia differs in many, many practical ways, but I believe the situations should first be analysed from a theoretical and principal(?) view. To do that, I would start by asking a few questions:

Q: What gives you the right to decide over me?
A: Nothing.

Q: What gives your small group of people the right to decide over my small group?
A: Nothing.

Q: What gives your big group of people the right to decide over my big group.
A: ??

If you think the answer to the last question is also "Nothing", then the logical conclusion is that the people in Kosovo (both north and south of the Ibar) Abchazia, South Ossetia, Republica Srerbsk, Basque, Kashmir, Quebec and many other places should be free to make their own choices, and decide how they want to live, and with who.

Only after you have agreed that in theory, this is how it should be, only then can you start to draw up arguments and reasons why the right the self-determination does apply in this and that situation. And why your reasons are so much more compelling than a basic right to individual as well as collective freedom.

@2EA,

What is the difference between Kosovo and RS? Neither one was ever a country and they both have a majority which refuses to accept the laws of someone else.
RS will go for independence is due course and so will the north of Kosovo. You have started something which is only going to backfire on you but serve someone else's purpose.

Well done. If US can recognize you as a special case, then Russia can recognize RS as a special case as well. Who is going to stop Russia? You?
America has shown they have no intention of going to war with a stronger and more determined Russia of today.

EA: The history of Kosovo is one with it being apart of Serbia. Main points, Kosovo was never apart of Albania and never independent. So comparing Kosovo to the Georgian problem is a fair one. Republic of Srpska can also be thrown into this mix as well as Western Mecedonia and the Serb region in Croatia Krayina. Remember that what's good for the goose is good for the gander!

"Obviously, the issue of Kosovo and its independence has been a trigger for many other similar situations,” Dodik told journalists in Banja Luka, adding that there was a substantial connection between Kosovo, Abkhazia and South Ossetia.'

Well said. The dominos are starting to fall, one by one.

It's only a matter of time before Republika Srpska declares independence. Dodik alluded to this, if you read between the lines :)).
The americans have pretty much never made an agreement that they honoured lately, so why should Serbia or anyone else honour Dayton? International law? Ha!! The yanks threw that in the garbage long ago, and now they are feeling the blowback. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what is coming.
It is now the law of the jungle, thanks to the 'brilliance' of Cowboy George, Condi, and the rest of their posse.

EA

Again and again the Serbs are trying really hard to draw a paralell between Kosova and South Ossetia. It is absolutely insane the comparison. South Ossetia can only be compared to Northern Mitrovica. Kosova has its own history and it is a sui generis case. The population of South Ossetia is around 100 thousand accourding to the Russian ambassador at the UN though I am not very sure about that. The footage of Kosova conflicts are still disponible for those who want to see and learn.

and this foto of dodik that you guys and gals are running -- give me a break! it looks like a site for his reelection campaign, except guess what? there is no democratic opposition in RS.

thank you.

Peggy,
I take it that you think US resistance to going to war with Russia is some sort of cowardice.
