Matthew and USA serb,

First, I suggest you read VERY carefully what conditions the EU has stipulated in order for Serbia to advance in the path to membership in the EU.

Second, do not delude yourselves into believing that meeting SOME of the conditions will be enough to become a member. The EU is quite rigorous when evaluating a prospective member. You must realize that the EU does not have the Balkan mentality where in slipshod procedures are enough to pass muster. Admission to the Club is considered an honor with all the obligations that go with membership in the EU. The EU does not cut slack for any country nor does it raise the bar arbitrarily as many Serb posters here claim.

Thirdly and lastly, even when all conditions are met (and Serbia is far from meeting all conditions) there is no guarantee that admission will be immediate. As has been said before by the EU, there is in effect a suspension to granting membership in the foreseeable future.

No matter what we do (or not do) we will never be part of EU. And I don't understand why should we. Why do we need somebody from Belgium or Holland telling us how to run our business. They, and other bigger EU countries have blood on their hands in destruction of Yugoslavia. They didn't like us then, and now somehow they like us when we are all separate. Serbia needs capable and patriotic government. There is plenty of highly educated and very capable people in Serbia who could lead it much better (and away from EU) than Tadic and his cronies. There are now many institutions in Serbia where you are at a risk of losing your job if you are not member of Democratic party. It reminds me of times when JUL, or Socialists were in power. Some really stupid and mean people lead many institutions just because they are "members" of Democratic party. and pretty much anybody who is not a member is pushed aside. There should be referendum on whether majority in Serbia wants to join EU. If they want to, then let them be second class citizens.

Why the hurry to become second class citizens in the United States of Germany?

Excellent post. Could not have said it better myself.

Looking at the Bulgarian, Romanian and Polish in England, there is just no better indication as to how Serbs will be treated.

I think enough is enough. They will never stop with ultimatums. You give them finger, they want your hand, you give them your hand, they want your arm. Never ending story. What is wrong with our politicians? Does any one of them have any guts. This saga with EU needs to end. This is going no ware. What was all that rush to initial SAA before elections in Serbia. Obviously it’s clear now to everyone that they ware meddling in the internal affairs of Serbia. The worst thing is that they have succeeded. And our wimp President Tadic is being duped over and over again. Or his Swiss account is getting bigger and bigger. We need to start playing the same game EU is playing with us. I say, implement full SAA agreement with Serbia or Serbia does not want to negotiate with you any more. EU hasn’t lived up to one promise yet. This would be a good start.
Let’s see your true colors. And than we can talk.

I continue to wonder when Serbian politicians and many Serbian people will realize that regardless of what the Serbian government does, the EU and the US will ALWAYS come up with additional reasons to block EU entry. It doesn't matter how many fugitives are sent to the Hague or how many economic and political conditions are met! Given this fact, why would the Serbian government cooperate knowing that there is no positive outcome in the end for the Serbian people? At some point, one has to build his or her own road to a successful future. The Serbian government has two choices to make: stay with the west and lose everything including cultural and religious freedom for some economic gain or the government can begin to build its own road and turn its back to the west. I will and always have been in favor of the latter knowing what the other option will bring to Serbia. In any event, the current Serbian government is either naive, paid to continue serving western interests, or both.

As I said many times and I will repeat it again-the EU is just waste of time. But our politicans seems to be very blind.

Holland has been making noise that merely arresting all war criminals is not enough, that Serbia’s witnesses need to cooperate and the government needs to turn over more documents. I suspect there will be additional conditions once Mladic is arrested.

NO ONE, except the Albanians here are claiming Kosovo needs to be part of the deal.

However, it’s obvious the Serbian people do not support trading Kosovo for the EU. Even if Tadic’s government supported such an idea, they do not have a strong enough mandate to do that and the government would fall.

Why the hurry to become second class citizens in the United States of Germany?

maybe the serbs should sign the deal first then extradite Radovan Karadžić and mladic because we all know how some of the euro countries lie because some say yes but then the rest say no .

Serbs will surely give up, Mladic, Kosovo, etc. More you hang around, more you loose credibility, bigger will probably be the price you will have to pay in order to be considered with seriousness and respect by other countries. Time is money. Yes! you are saving time, but you are loosing a lot of money! Someone is taking the profits! Who? Croatia, Slovenia … and Albania. Good for them!
