You obviously feel bitter towards Serbia, and I can agree that some pretty disgusting things have been done in its name.

Also, I think that the racist ethnic cleansing of Serbs from Kosovo by Albanians - going back at least as far as 1982 is sufficiently persistent and disgusting that it was wrong for the US to allow the UDI as a reward.

Most people in most countries are decent and law abiding - they are not rapists and murderers. On the other hand there are no sides in the Balkans that can genuinely claim to have behaved with total love for their neighbours.

EU members do not war with each other, and they acknowledge the decent people in the societies rather than judging on the basis of the wicked.

Good luck with your application.

To enter there all you need to do is kill, rape and hate others.

Don't worry Erik, if that was the case Albanians would be first in line to join Europe...

On another more seriouse note already the EU is putting pressure, even if Tadic forms a government after this supposed deadline then they will get nothing from the EU and inturn render their promises lies and useless.

Be careful Tadic your treading on thin ice and its already May...

After all the war and atrocities that Serbia has committed, it is a disgrace that it is even being mentioned that it may get candidacy status by the end of the year.

You have pro European countries like Albania who has sign SAA years ago and still there is no mention of Candidacy status.

I think I have to agree with comments from other side here that EU is a joke.

Erik if that was the criteria
for entering the EU
then Albanians along with the CroHATES would have entered many many years ago.
I just hope Serbia's new government are not tricked or conned by the likes of Solano and Rehn.

Mircea, the "Magyar átok" = "Hungarian Curse" is:
1) one Hungarian means one big ethnic pride.
2) two Hungarians mean three small political parties.
3) three Hungarians does not mean anything because first is a Sváb (German), the second is a Jew and the third is a Tót (Slovak).

In that spirit not sure about Serbs and #3, but #1 and #2 seem to be the case in Serbia as well. That means, June 10 looks like a VERY-VERY optimistic deadline for me.

A side note about the "ethnic pride". It's a curiosity, but probably many noticed, there are many "ethnic" family names in Hungary. Most often we can find family names like:

"Horvát" or "Horváth" (Croat)
"Tót" (Slovak)
"Bajor" (Bavarian)
"Oláh" (Romanian)
"Rác" or "Rácz" ('from Rashka' = Serb)
"Szerb" (see "Rác")
"Orosz" (Russian)
"Lengyel" (Polish)

Usually they do NOT mean, the ancestor was of certain ethnic! Except... "Horvát". This is because without exception all who had "Jellasics" family name converted it to "Horvát" or "Horváth" - in late 19th Century it was SO unpopular. The author of most famous Hungarian cookbook, Ilona Horváth

http://tinyurl.com/4sw5w3

is indeed the direct descendent of Bán József Jellasics.

So much about the ethnic pride... tsk, tsk, don't tell anyone I did say that Ilona Horváth story!

The whole story in Hungarian is here:

It's worth to note, Jellasics family changed the name to Horváth because the child was teased in the school "Fut Bécs felé Jellasics, a gyáva" (Jellasics, the coward runs to Vienna) - this is from Sándor Petöfi, the greatest Hungarian poet. Wait a second... Sándor Petöfi was born as Aleksandar Petrovic. His mother was Slovak, his father was a "Slav" who converted from Orthodox. Does not sound very Hungarian for me, but this is indeed a tangled web waved by our ancestors. I am 50% Hungarian and 50% Russian. Going few generations back, Germans, Poles, Romanians, Turks, Jews, Slovaks will "appear" as well. C'est la vie.

If Serbia receives EU candidate status this year then this would be great news for the people of Serbia. The new Serbian government should concentrate on implementing the SAA.
