> I'm curious to know, has any of the above commenters even read Del Ponte's book?
Can't read italian. But will certainly be reading the english translation when it comes out next year.
As for the story itself being propaganda, find this to be implausible in the extreme. Story has received wide circulation (although not in mainstream US media) & del Ponte is no doubt aware of it. Would've refuted it by now if incorrect.
> So my advice to the agit-prop beavers around here is to be patient and read the book for yourselves. I'm pretty sure there will be in there plenty of dirt about Serbia too, but even if these allegations are in the book in the same form as presented in the Serbian media, then let the justice investigate and punish the culprits. There is an international court that deals with these kind of crimes,
Suggest you re-read my previous post. Above is precisely what I said, although unlike you, I believe that investigation should be undertaken immediately & robustly. Evidence can be destroyed, & as this story has only just surfaced, the time element is critical.
While some evidence will always remain, finding it will be much harder.
And unlike you, I have no faith in albanian authorities given the penetration of these by albanian mafia, KLA & mafia links, & KLA involvement in atrocities.
For those who want a refresher, here's what del Ponte said:
> In her book, “The Hunt”, to be published in Italy on April 3, the former Hague Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte states that, during investigations into war crimes committed by the Kosovo Liberation Army, KLA, against Serbs and other non-Albanians, the prosecutor’s office was informed that persons who disappeared during the Kosovo conflict were used in organ smuggling operations.
> The office obtained information that UNMIK investigators and officials had received from groups of so-called reliable journalists, according to whom, Kosovo Albanians had transferred 300 Serb and other non-Albanian hostages in trucks to northern Albania in the summer of 1999.
> Those prisoners were first imprisoned in camps in places like Kukes and Tropoje.
> According to journalist sources, the younger and fitter prisoners were examined by doctors, got food and were not beaten. After that, they were kept in custody in other centers in Burel and the surrounding area.
> One group was held in barracks behind a yellow house some twenty kilometers to the south of that town, states the former prosecutor.
> One room in that yellow house, according to the journalists, served as an operation room where doctors extracted prisoners’ organs.
> Afterwards, the organs, according to the sources, were sent abroad from Rinas airport near Tirana where they were used in transplantations for patients who had paid for it.
> Daily Večerenje Novosti brings more details from the book, which says that the Hague and UNMIK investigators, and several journalist, along with an Albanian prosecutor, made a trip to the yellow house in 2003.
> "It was now white," Del Ponte writes. "Despite the fact that investigators discovered traces of yellow paint on it, the owner denied it was ever repainted."
> In its vicinity, investigators also found pieces of gauze, used syringes, two plastic IV solution bags, "petrified in mud", empty medicine bottles, including muscle relaxants used during surgeries.
> Inside the house itself, forensics discovered traces of blood on the walls and on the floor in one of the rooms. A section of the floor, sized 180 by 60 centimeters, was clean.
> "The owner of the house offered a series of explanations to the investigators when it came to the origin of the blood traces. First, he said that his wife gave birth in that room many years ago. But when the wife made her statement and said that all their children were born elsewhere, he claimed that his family used the room to slaughter animals in order to celebrate a Muslim holiday," Del Ponte writes.
> As for the Albanian prosecutor who accompanied them, the former chief Hague prosecutor says he at one point bragged he had cousins who were KLA members.
> "There are no graves of Serbs here," the Albanian official said. "But, if they took the Serbs from the Kosovo border and killed them, they did the right thing".
> Describing detailed information she has on the matter, Del Ponte writes that detectives had had to give up on this case because further investigation had proved "impossible".
While the above certainly wouldn't constitute sufficient proof of the case in the Hague, it is certainly enough for a damning indictment on those who may be responsible. An investigation is warranted.
The Hague must do all it can to uncover the truth.
And it must start immediately.

Russia should investigate the deaths of dozens of their own journalists before wasting their time with a book whose author has been ordered back to Argentina.
Russia is just throwing dust in everyone's eyes and trying to direct attention away from their problems.

I'm curious to know, has any of the above commenters even read Del Ponte's book? It seems to me that all we know so far, is Serbian media's interpretation of allegedly some extracts from the book. And the Serbian media is notorious for not only misrepresenting, misinterpreting but even for making up stuff, as it was the case with George Clooney's protest against Kosovar independence, that apparently happened only in the fertile imaginations of Serbian news editors.
There is an international court that deals with these kind of crimes, but even if Serbia wants to have it's own investigation, it can send a team in Tirana and a joint Serb-Albanian team can investigate the facts around these allegations and bring them to light for the public. Forensic science have solved crimes that happened more than a 100 years ago, if a crime of this size as being suggested here happened less than 10 years ago, I'm pretty sure they will find plenty of evidence. If it happened, there will be bodies, there will be material evidence, that given the sheer scale of such an operation and its logistics would be impossible to hide. It would've been impossible on this scale to house, feed, guard, transport all these people, and above all removing, transporting and passing all these organs through the security of the Tirana Airport, that at the time was at the hands of the Americans, and a huge US Army base - without Albanian secret services not know about it, and Fatos Nano, that was PM of Albania at the time - himself an Orthodox and flamboyantly pro-Greek - not know about it, and given the rumors that his wife Joanna works for the Greek Secret Services, probably the Greek government would have known about it too. So, there can be plenty of people to question, apart from material evidence. So let there be an investigation, and if it's proven that this crime happened, let anyone involved get the punishment they deserve.
Justice should be based on facts and evidence not on some wild allegations that no one cares to investigate, and that are spinned and twisted by propaganda artists and hate-mongers. Otherwise it fuels irrational hate and prejudice and it serves neither the victims and their families, nor the wider public. It was exactly propaganda like this that Serbia used in the early 1990's to inflame the hatred and rabid nationalism. I hope no one wants a repeat of that. So let the facts be investigated thoroughly and transparently so we all know whether this crime really happened, or otherwise who was the one to instigate the lies.

THe most ridiculous thing is that no major media / broadcast house (such as CNN, BBC, FOX) are even mentioning this story. This shows how ridiculously censored western media is. If this was done somewhere else,in china or something, this would be a bigest headline...

Dejan, maybe it shows how ridiculous and unfounded this story. There is no concrete evidence whatsoever so far.
Ok, maybe Del Ponte was told to shut her mouth, but don't you think that if this actually happened, serbs and the serbian goverment would have published something before? or at least set up a team to try and find evidence and confirm the story, especially since if true it would have been the biggest PR against independence. Don't you think its wierd that nobody heard about this story for 10 years?

The Hague tribunal certainly has some questions to answer.
So do Joachim Ruecker & Larry Rossin - even more so. They are the ones who are supposed to protect the people giving evidence. And 1244 specifically states that UNMIK has to fully co-operate with the ICTY. Wheras the reverse was the case.
And of course there are the actual crimes themselves.
The victims of Ramush Haradinaj & others like him deserve justice. A 6yr sentence for his uncle just doesn't cut it.
And the whole idea of harvesting internal organs from your enemies is so far beyond the pale, that the Hague should be moving heaven & earth to thoroughly investigate the issue.

Thanks Russia for the continuous support.......Unfortunately, I don't expect much in this regard from the Hague. They just showed in Haradinaj case how they deal with facts stated in books - they ignore them. It's not evidence valid enough when it comes to cases which would portray Serbs as victims ...... However, when it's about accusing Serbs any evidence is good enough. Double standards??? No. Has anyone ever wondered how one starts to believe in conspiracy theories????

knowint Del Ponte, she will certainly not give up there, not her style and we can only be thankfull to her that she finally deciced to speak out loud eventhough she as the swiss ambassador to argentina she shouldn't do it. But however followed her carrier should understand that politics and her are two different paths...
Of course the book was banned by the foreign ministry (her employer), but the minister itself has been lately so much critized by the entire swiss political scene for her completely unthoughtfull moves on many fronts including participating to the signature of a private gaz contract with iran and the opening of an embassy in pristina. Thanks to her latest stupid moves she managed to drive a lot of anger from all around the world including UN.

And still no comment from George Bush or his cronies about this Frankenstein-like heinousness. If Serbs were alleged to have done this, the matter would have been publicized a decade ago. Is America reall that morally bankrupt to make partnerships with those who are in the business of making a Greater Albania and who would also view non-Albanians in Kosovo province as a butcher might view a carcass for making various cuts of meat from it? America's silence is America's shame.
