"Zavales said that the unilateral declaration will have consequences on the secessionist movements in the world, and quoted Spain's concerns over the Basque region, and the concerns of Turkey, Iraq and Syria over their Kurdish minority. Zavales added that "there are also the cases of Nagorno Karabakh, Abkhasia and South Ossetia"

All good news of course (I'm serious). And let's add, hopefully, Peurto Rico, Chechnya, Palestine, and, if demographic and other trends continue, northern Ireland joining Ireland.

We should use the term "democratic countries" for a group of countries that are willing to break every law from the book to ethnically cleanse and steal a piece of land. So, instead of writing this cumbersome sentence again in the future to label those countries you just say "democratic countries". We have already gotten one more word that is shortening sentences: bushism. With this trend I expect that "dictatorship" will be a more positive word than "democracy" in about 30 years.

November 18, 2004. John Zavales: Support for Kosovo independence falling.

There is less international support for Kosovo independence now than there was five years ago, political analyst John Zavales said today.

Every thing this Zavales guy writes he adds in there "I am an independent consultant"... "I am independent".

Ok Zavales, we believe you.

Dear B92,

You describe Zavales as a "US analyst", but a more accurate description would be a lobbyist for Serbia, given his connections to the Serb Unity Congress.

Posting his opinion, like those of Stratfor etc. is known as "cherry-picking" when you chose information or intelligence to suit your own predisposition. Like with Cheney, Wolfowitz and the stories of WMD in Iraq.

It's sad to see, B92 staff should no better.

Well let me seriously put that in doubt. This John Zavales predicted 2 years ago that the West would have to apply some copnvincing force, to force the Albanians to integrate in Serbia.

It is however very interesting that US analysts with Slav or Greek surnames (in this occasion Zavales is a grecized Turkish word, which means something like "poor") always have negative analysis on the Kosovo issue. Without trying to be prejudicial, is there any link between the two facts? Something wrong in the melting pot with Slavic and Greek ancestries?

To all you pro-independence posters who are struggling for recognition, I throw Montenegro in your faces. Montenegro split off from Serbia with mutual consent and was recognized by all 192 countries and entered the UN in 3 weeks! This was because all of it was NEGOTIATED - a word that is not in the albanian language. So there.

Since when is joining an international club mean statehood? If UN disbands tomorrow does it mean that member countries are no long countries? Let's be real, the Holy see is recognized as a sovereign state but it is not a UN country. Israel is a UN country but over 35 countries do not recognize it, etc etc.

Do you get my point? America had to wait 36 years (War of 1812) to get recognized by Great Britain. Let's see where Kosova is in 2044 than let's speculate.

All of this could have been avoided had the State Department and certain individuals in Washington not pursued a drunk driving approach to Kosovo's controversial independence. Had a full peace treaty been worked out with Serbia, had generous compensation been offered to Belgrade, or at the very least the ability to engage in joint-sovereignty of the region been entertained, had enough concessions been made to facilitate a UN resolution, the region would have achieved the stability it's witch-doctors were predicting. Sadly, this is just another in a growing list of American unilateral adventures in folly.

Kosova already has been recognized by most democratic countries, which is one big plus when you compare to other partial regognized countries.Expected very soon Kosova will have regognision by many OIC member contries and many Africans states.Expected the number will grow to at least 2/3 of 192 UN countries. The number will grow further in future once those contries who opose Kosova recognision they find politics boring and they will bring new statements regarding new status.
We all know from experience that many states are friends for many years and than they become a enemy to each other.
Kosova will survive even as it is at the moment, need a economic grow to meet at least basic needs of its citizens. As for standard of living Kosova allways has depended on its citizens living abroad where millions of pounds/euro go to Kosovo every day.

All in all, perhaps just about 50 countries will recognize Kosovo, out of the 192 UN members, which is not even one-third, and this certainly is not significant support, despite U.S. international lobbying for the independence of Kosovo," Zavales was quoted.

With a percentage of recognition in the region of 26% of the countries of the world i cannot honestly imagine how kosovo will develop without its connection with Serbia.Iam afraid that both EU & US will have to support it for many years. If for some reason the financial support is not forthcoming then we'll
probably see attempts by the albanians to destabilise the regional countries that have sufficient numbers of them. The omens for future regional developments don't look promising.

Kosovo is Independent. The new reality.
Two things, he is missing:
Taiwan's pro-china policy party won. China and Taiwan are going to get very close. Cypruss greeks and turks have decided to sit down and resolve their issues. India is sending its special envoy to speak with Kashmiris.
