Hi Nicola

The EU and NATO were as one on the issue of the bombing.

As with everything else, it would be better to put any bitterness about that into the past. Serbia was a good ally during the world wars against fascism, and Serbia as part of Yugoslavia won a lot of respect in the West. However, that got thrown away when Serbia was taken down the road of selfish nationalism by Milosevic and the rest of those who cynically disregarded international humanitarian law during the Bosnian conflict. Serbia is coming out of the deep hole it was in - but one of the issues it needs to continue to address is the fact that it acquired a pariah status during the conflict and that the bombing was thought necessary by the rest of the world for very good reasons.

This matter is best dealt with and then forgotten.

The future is more interesting than the past.

Hi Nikola

The ones who starved you were the corrupt government of Milosevic who ripped you off in every way possible.

The bombing was not done because other people disliked you - it was because of political pressure on them to prevent another set of murders occurring. Again, it was very much due to the poor politics of Milosevic.

Don't blame the west - blame stupid nationalism and the beliefs that somehow Serbs are hard-done-by that Milosevic exploited to keep himself in power.

The people of Europe could not understand the need for the war and just saw lives wasted.

Joining with the people of Europe is to join with friends. Notice that people who once hated Germany because of the world wars have forgiven and forgotten - we have excellent friendly relations. Serbia will also be accepted once the stupidities of the last few years have had time to pass.

Fortunately not all Serbs need convincing - they are pleased that history is moving on towards something more promising and a lot more sensible. Pragmatically you are right however - money is the issue that will help persuade the rest!

Possible EU membership and military non alignment do not make for a serene Serbia. One or the other will give and it would be quite a sight when this happens.

This is a good sign on joining/cooperating with the EU and also military non-alignment. These policies certainly stem from the strong position of Serbian sovereignty and integrity.
