Domestic
violence – a burning issue
Did you know that one in six children and one in three women in
Serbia fall prey to the scourge of family violence, including sexual
abuse?
Until recently hidden behind closed doors, women and children who
are the victims of family violence and sexual abuse are now flooding
front pages and TV screens. The number of those seeking help from
the social institutions, counselors and shelters has been constantly
on the rise in the past couple of years.
We
have decided to react!
RTV B92 is launching a campaing titled “For Our Children” that
covers a number of different projects and activities dedicated to
the specific issues of domestic violence & sexual abuse as well
as youth education and development.
Our general intention is to step away from the role of the broadcaster
- to carry news, pass on to the public political messages and conduct
social campaigns, and leave it to others to respond and try to solve
the problems. We believe that it is necessary for the sake of all
of us to come full circle: to discern and identify problems, inform
our public, launch campaigns, offer reasonable solutions, and control
how the issues that have been raised are solved through very specific
projects.
Ružica Đindic will preside over the “For Our Children” campaign
council. .
What
do we want to achieve?
Our goal is to build a safe house (shelter) for victims of domestic
violence in Belgrade.
Once finished, this house will be handed over to Belgrade NGO
“Counseling
Against Family Violence” it for an unlimited period of time to run and maintain.
This project entails fund-raising, organization and logistics for
the building and the furnishing of the house sized 220 sq meters.
We intend to build another similar structure in the project’s next
phase thus acquiring a shelter sized 440 sq meters housing 50 women
and children.
Who are we helping?
“Counseling against Family Violence” is a Belgrade NGO committed
to the protection of the victims of home violence and sex trafficking.
They currently run four shelters in the Belgrade City area, three
for the victims of home violence and another one for the victims
of human trafficking.
Over the course of its past ten years in existence, this NGO has
protected more than 30,000 women and children who were the victims
of family violence and sexual abuse. Although extremely efficient
and successful in domestic violence victims’ treatment, the activities
of this NGO are constantly under threat due to chronic underfunding.
B92 Safe House will radically reduce the NGO's operating costs
and help ensure its future.
Currently, there are no shelters or safe houses run by the government
bodies on Belgrade territory. One of the project's objectives is
to present an operating fully functional model to the competent
state agencies.
Estimated project costs amount to around € 120,000, the cost of
the plot of land not included.
Our goal is to have the house built and equipped by spring 2007.
What
have we done so far?
One of our principal partners in this campaign is the Belgrade
Land Development Public Agency and various Belgrade municipalities.
The first one to answer the B92 call was Rakovica District Municipality
Council, currently run by a young and efficient management team.
They decided to donate a plot of land to B92 (for 99 years) for
the purpose of building and running a safe house.
On June 28, 2006, Rakovica Municipality, B92 and “Counseling against
Family Violence” jointly signed a contract thus closing the deal.
We have also made contact with a number of institutions crucial
for the smooth implementation of our project.
How
can you help?
1. Donating to build the house
After securing the plot and all the necessary permits, B92 will
start building the house. Until then the funds amounting to €
120,000 must be obtained.
You may also support the safe house providing the necessary furniture
and specific construction works.
You can find the bank account details for Serbian donations

2. Helping shelter maintenance
After the safe house – shelter has been handed over for permanent
use to the “Counseling against Family Violence”, you will be able
to support it through donating goods necessary for its daily operations,
providing the necessary supplies of staple food, hygienic products,
etc.
