| Matsuura is one of the founders of this famous
trio, a DJ and producer and pioneer of the Japanese
and world club scene. His magnificent disc collection
includes many gems differing unmistakeably from
everything else – the UFO sound.
Before the trio’s foundation in 1990, Matsuura
was making his own music, blending weird, jazzy
samples and exotic rhythms. Club dates always
included a surprise in the form of a combo, dance
groups or hypnotic passages dug out from God-knows-where
and sampled. Sebaag, Yabe and Matsuura won global
recognition with their first album for the Talkin’
Loud label. Various collaborations, remixes and
tours followed hot on its heels. Matsuura, our
March guest, provides the philosophy of entertainment
for this group, whether it’s in a club, a private
party or at home, when you listen to any of his
many releases. So far, five original UFO albums
have been released and five compilations of remixes
and rare tracks.
Having collaborated with Kruder & Dorfmeister,
Thievery Corporation, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Jazzanova,
Monday Michiru, Koop, Snowboy and others, as well
as founding the Brownswood studios and label with
Gilles Peterson, UFO have become an unavoidable
name on the world club scene. UFO isn’t only music,
it’s also fashion, design and painting. So, if
you try hard enough, you can find a UFO-designed
Casio watch, or a special UFO Pioneer portable
CD player.
Matsuura will play Belgrade after Moscow as part
of his mini tour of Europe. His mix of Latino,
jazz, funk, house and soul sound will attract
anyone who enjoyed Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova,
Rainer Truby and other master who have played
Belgrade in recent years.
Matsuura insists on a three-hour set in order
to have time to play everything he has planned.
Local support will come from prominent club veteran
DJ Peppe, bringing back the groove of the soul-funk
days.
