 For
World Music Day, Saturday, June 21, we present
some refreshment from the Belgrade club scene:
two prestigious DJs and producers from Paris,
the European capital of fine house sound, Alex
Gopher and Etienne de Crecy.
During the nineties, Paris
grew into the centre of European electronic club
music, thanks to a whole generation of talented
musicians who have refined their own style of
US genres such as house and techno. This typically
European style was based on elements of the old
disco sound, with jazz and downbeat elements,
and a feel for chic samples. The wit and cool
which characterises the best French artists quickly
found their way onto the global market, launching
French house artists and similar pop projects
into the orbit of the most successful contemporary
pop performers.
Somewhere near the beginning
of a journey which eventually led to St Germain,
Air, Daft Punk, Dimitri from Paris and Bob Sinclair
was the Super Discount project, a sampler by Etienne
de Crecy from 1997 for the Solid Independent label.
Super Discount was not only an exceptionally fun
series, with its supermarket concept and aptly
minimalist design, it was also a vivid demonstration
of the huge talent of the French performers who
were to astonish the world over the next few years.
Along with Etienne de Crecy, who put down the
sexy and legendary Kraftwekesque Prix Choc, we
met future stars like Air, Alex Gopher and Cassius,
featuring brilliant songs whose freshness has
still not staled, a rare phenomenon in a genre
characterised by seasonal changes of style and
a short shelf life.
Etienne de Crecy demonstrated
his rich talent with the early project La Chat
Rouge and particularly the Motorbass album Pansoul
in 1996, another landmark of modern electronic
sound, pointing the way to the spiritual trend
of dance music. His idiosyncratic and creative
use of sampling was on a par with that of St Germain
who emerged at the same time. Although already
recognised as a trend-setting producer and composer,
De Crecy released his first solo album Tempovision
in 2001. This was another creative triumph, merging
the elements needed for global commercial success
with the ultimate in pop art. The project’s concept
was underlined with a series of outstanding animated
videos by his younger brother, setting their post-apocalyptic
vision in the world of the consumer society.
On his first two solo efforts,
You, My Baby and I (1999) and Wuz (2002), Alex
Gopher polished his unique style and scored a
number of big hits, the best known of which is
The Child, with its irresistible Billie Holliday
sample. Like de Crecy, Gopher has made his mark
on the charts, but his music is at its most exciting
in the clubs for which is made, a fact demonstrated
by the innumerable remixes of his tracks.
Alex Gopher and Etienne de
Crecy today embody style, good taste and classy,
witty club entertainment, the like of which we
don’t see every day. Their Belgrade performance
is an outstanding opportunity to see them together,
because they rarely appear in this format.
