German parliament greenlights opening of chapters

German parliament's Committee for European Affairs has given the green light for the opening of the first two chapters in Serbia's EU accession negotiations.

German parliament greenlights opening of chapters

Committee Chairman Gunter Krichbaum told Chancellor Angela Merkel in a letter that the committee recommends the opening of chapter at the next summit in December, by which parliamentary procedures in Germany on this issue have been completed.

As stated by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the decision was taken at an extraordinary session of the Bundestag (German parliament).

"This is a clear signal for the country that is moving in the direction of Europe and shows that the consequent European approach of Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic is correct," said Krichbaum.

He added that the German parliament found it very important that the agreement of August 25 "finally made a step forward in relations between Serbia and Kosovo," and "looks forward to the European Commission report on Serbia because it contains a lot of positive reviews."

He added that Vucic's visit to Srebrenica was a very important gesture.

Krichbaum said that "Serbia's place is in Europe" and that Germany "expects Serbia to continue to walk that path."

"Serbia still has a lot of tasks, both in the fight against corruption and in judicial reform. Future reforms are not an end in themselves, but are implemented in the interest of the country. Thus, foreign investors, who in the future should provide jobs, especially need effective legal and governmental structure," a statement said.
