Jeremić officially launches CIRSD

BELGRADE The Center for International Relations and Sustainable Development (CIRSD), founded by Serbia's former Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, has officially opened. Jeremic, who until recently served as president of the UN General Assembly, told a news conference that the Center will hire young experts from Serbia and the academic community for the implementation of projects on international politics and sustainable development. Jeremic officially launches CIRSD He noted that CIRSD will formally function as part of the institutions in charge of the issues within the Columbia University global network. CIRSD will be funded from private sources and the financier will publish its report on the Center's website at the end of the year. One of the guests at the opening was U.S. economic expert Jeffrey Sachs. Jeremic underscored that the High Council of the Serbian Presidency of the UNGA presented a strategic document concerning the goals of sustainable development, adding that Sachs and himself drafted the document which, according to his assessment, constitutes the vision of the world's development. Sachs said that CIRSD will secure the role of Serbia and the entire region in the academic engagement in solving the key issues of humankind. CIRSD task will be to ensure independent research, analysis and practical recommendations for improvement of peaceful cooperation between countries and raising the awareness concerning the changes on the global level. It will also advocate the idea of a more open, inclusive and secure international system and promote sustainable development. The former foreign minister is the CIRSD president and former Spanish foreign minister Miguel Angel Moratinos is the honorary president. The advisory council comprises Sachs, guest professor of Oxford University and former Kuwaiti deputy prime minister Sheikh Muhammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, former prime minister of Pakistan Shaukat Aziz, former foreign ministers of Switzerland, Cyprus, Morocco, Senegal, Chile and Indonesia, as well as Director of the Development Research Center of the State Council Li Wei.
