BELGRADE MUP's Criminal Investigations Police chief Rodoljub Milovic has denied that he had ordered the wiretapping of top Serbian state officials. "What is happening here is a heroic attack from behind. Does anyone believe that I wiretapped President Tomislav Nikolic and First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic, of whose honesty and courage I am proud," Milovic was quoted as saying by Belgrade's Vecernje Novosti newspaper. Criminal Investigations chief denies wiretapping This police official added that he was committed to work in the anti-corruption team and that he was a part of the team working day and night on clarifying more than 30 affairs that shook the country in the past years. "I am relaxed and surrounded by honest men in the working group. We all believe in Nikolic and Vucic's idea of a fairer Serbia. This is a chance for all of us and our children, and everything that was happening in the past days was 'a heroic attack from behind,'" Milovic said. According to Vecernje Novosti, he strongly emphasized that "amateurs, wretches and ignorant people are creating chaos." "Not only me and my friends, but also honest policemen fighting for the truth and against corruption are going through this. These are all people who believe in the idea of a pure and more beautiful Serbia," Milovic concluded. Meanwhile, the Belgrade-based tabloid Blic is reporting that the order "to monitor the phone calls of Aleksandar Vucic and Nebojsa Stefanovic", that Milovic had allegedly signed, has now "disappeared". The article adds that Milovic has sent a report about the case to Vucic, in which he allegedly stated that he "most likely signed the order, but did not know who sent the paper to be singed, nor whose (telephone) numbers were in question". On Monday, Police Director Milorad Veljovic suggested that the "wiretapping" in question referred to requests to phone operators to submit lists of telephone conversations that had taken place. It was also announced yesterday that the Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Internal Affairs would ask the MUP to provide information related to the affair.
