BELGRADE In the past ten years, wildfires destroyed forests worth some RSD 45 billion (EUR 383 million), the authorities have appraised. The latest wave of fires in the country could have cost up to RSD 4 billion. Wildfires in Serbia cause huge material damage Public forestry management company Srbijasume Director Predrag Aleksic told B92 that it was necessary "to raise awareness of the citizens about the importance of forests": "The fires that are now burning, which since the beginning of the year covered some 3,500 to 4,000 hectares of state-owned forests, will certainly be worth a total of three to four billion dinars. We could have bought a lot of equipment to reduce the size of the area under fires for that amount of money, to prevent fires from occurring." This official added that "prevention was the key in a time of climate changes, when forests are the condition for survival", and urged the citizens to "all together take more care of our woods". Aleksic noted that planting one hectare of land with new forest costs between EUR 1,000-2,000, and noted that "this shows how much money and time it will take for the damage to be repaired". Meanwhile, the wildfire on Mt. Tara in western Serbia is under control, and is expected to be put out today, with water-bombers also taking part in the effort, MUP Emergency Situations Sector chief Pregrag Maric has said. B92
