Six persons, three young women and three men, lost their lives in a fire that broke out in Novi Sad’s Contrast night club around 02:00 CET on Sunday. According to the preliminary information, the fire broke out on the club’s stage and it was caused by faulty electrical wiring. Serbian President Boris Tadic has expressed deepest regret over the tragedy and the loss of young lives. Novi Sad Municipal Court Investigative Judge Ana Stamenic told reporters that two of the victims have been identified so far and that investigators did not find any IDs on the other four victims. She stressed that she could not release the names of the two identified victims but stressed that they were about 18 years old. “Two persons were admitted to the Vojvodina Clinical Center’s Emergency Room,” Clinical Center Spokeswoman Jelena Jurisin has said. According to the latest information, police have brought 50 people in for questioning, including the club’s owner. Serbian Police Director Milorad Veljovic came to the scene on Sunday morning and said that the preliminary investigation showed that the fire was caused by faulty wiring. “The investigation is underway and the cause of the tragedy will be determined, just like it will be determined whether all regulations were respected and if there were any possible oversights. The club was regularly inspected and technical irregularities that could cause the fire were not noticed,” Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic has stated.
