For the sake of stealing 450 kilograms of copper that will be sold for "next to nothing" to resellers of recycled materials, the company has incurred damages of over EUR 20,000, a statement said.

It added that the grid operates using 25,000 volts and that it was greatly fortunate that the thieves did not die during the incident.

The damage is doubled as the grid that has been severed cannot be extended, and a new 600 meters of contact grid wires must be installed instead, the company said.

The Interior Ministry was on Wednesday morning investigating the scene, while trains are being rerouted to alternative lines.
