The goal of the undertaking is to "strengthen the cult of the flag" - and other cities will also get similar flagpoles.

The initiative came from Aleksadar Vucic, Serbia's prime minister and president-elect, who asked the city authorities in Belgrade to provide a list of possible locations.

The decision was then made to install the flagpole in a spot between the Usce shopping mall and the Little War Island, where a base of the Serbian Army's River Flotilla is located.

City manager Goran Vesic has confirmed that the Serbian flag will soon be displayed in this way, and thinks this will become "a recognizable symbol of Serbia and Belgrade."

Vesic said that the company Energoprojekt will build the flagpole, and that Danube's right bank, from Branko's Bridge to the Zemun Quay will become "a modern park with attractive content."

Vesic stressed that the initiative aims at establishing "the habit of displaying and respecting" the country's flag.
