The waiter, who speaks six languages, might make you think that Skadarlija can compete with Montmartre. National food, as expected, means meat in most cases, especially grilled meat which is authentically gourmet – grilled on charcoal, not gas or electric grills. If you decide on popular national dishes not including meat, there are a few to choose from, and some humorous omissions are likely to occur – the cheese pie was not on offer at the time of our visit, because some foreign tourists took “everything in stock”. We started our lunch with breaded hard cheese: coated in crumbs and nicely fried, a bit rubbery and relatively expensive. Then we ordered the vegetable pottage whose appearance and taste revealed, rather obviously, that the veggies came straight from the freezer. Otherwise, it was prepared correctly. Following the waiter’s recommendation, we ordered chicken liver in bacon and Skadarlija kebabs served with French fries and chopped onions on the side. There were no mistakes in the meat specialties: the chicken liver was fresh and superbly prepared, and the kebabs an excellent discovery: made of premium quality grilled meat, peppers and spices – a real pleasure for meat lovers. Unfortunately, the flat breads were plain, of the kind that sticks to your teeth. From a rather small offer of desserts, we chosen pancakes with chocolate and walnuts, which proved to be the right choice. All portions were served in earnest, and prices are affordable considering the food and bohemian setting. Meal for two, without wine, costs 2,500 dinars. Zlatan Bokal is probably the place with the best co-relation of quality and prices in the Skadarlija district.
