Hague grants Goran Hadzic temporary freedom

The tribunal said on Monday that he must return to The Hague by the end of May.

On March 16, the court rejected his request to be released on humanitarian grounds - considering that he is ill with brain cancer in the final stages, and wished to receive medical treatment in Serbia.

The former president of the Republic of Serb Krajina (RSK) will be transferred to the airport in Amsterdam "as soon as possible," where he will be met by a Serbian government representative, based on guarantees given by the Interior Ministry.

Hadzic was arrested in Serbia in July 2011 and extradited the same year. He has pleaded not guilty on all counts of the indictment against him, during the trial that started in October 2012.

The prosecution gave its closing arguments last April, while the defense started presenting its evidence in July.
