"NATO respects Serbia's military neutrality"

"The Alliance sees Serbia as an important member of the Partnership for Peace Program, and recently we have signed a new agreement which is to promote cooperation in terms of issues in mutual interest," Ferguson told the Belgrade-based daily Danas.

"The citizens of Serbia should view NATO as a partner that wants to employ its expertise to help the reform of the defense and security sector with all due respect for Serbia's policy of military neutrality," he underlined.

Commenting on the alliance's cooperation with Belgrade, Ferguson underlined that NATO has planned over 100 joint activities and 40 partner goals with Serbia this year.

More than 250 Serb soldiers have been recently certified through the Alliance's Operational Capabilities Concept. This training helps Serbia continue to offer an important contribution to the peacekeeping missions of the UN and the EU, while at the same time it ensures greater safety for your soldiers in these missions, Ferguson said.

Asked whether "relations between Belgrade and Moscow may hamper cooperation between Serbia and the NATO," he said that Serbia "has the right to choose its course, like all of its neighbors," adding that he was "certain that the country's partnership and cooperation with the NATO, which is based on mutual trust, is important for Serbia, the entire region, and also the alliance."

Ferguson said that the KFOR mission should ensure security and safety in Kosovo, and support the development of local security missions in cooperation with other international organizations.

"The normalization of practical cooperation between Belgrade and Pristina in the implementation of regulation in the zone of the administrative-border line will be necessary in order to put a stop to criminal activities and make progress with a view to EU aspirations," he said.

"As regards the presence of the troops, we will be flexible and guided solely by the situation in the field," Ferguson was quoted as saying.
