"Kosovo army" would be "unacceptable and harmful" - MPs

Drecun told reporters at the national assembly in Belgrade on Tuesday that only the presence of armed forces in Kosovo and Metohija in accordance with UNSC Resolution 1244 was that of KFOR.

"Pristina has been trying to create any kind of a legal framework for the formation of the so-called armed forces of Kosovo, which is unacceptable for several reasons. Such a formation would be a destabilizing factor and the deepening of inter-ethnic intolerance would give rise to a new destabilization and certainly create an additional barrier in the process of normalization of relations."

"The fact that certain countries that provide troops to KFOR are simultaneously conducting training of members and that future formation of Albanians in Kosovo and Metohija only shows they behave according to double standards," said Drecun.

He added that KFOR officials are expected to act in line with Resolution 1244 and not provide any support to the creation of these so-called armed forces.

Opposition DS party MP Borislav Stefanovic said that the move would be "a harmful thing that can cause shocks in the region."

"We'll see if that law will be adopted. In any case, it's disturbing news that is repeated cyclically and I'm under the impression that someone is constantly stirring up the subject, when it suits the government in Pristina, seeking to raise its quasi-patriotic profile and national consciousness in Kosovo," Stefanovic told reporters.

He believes that "we should wait and see whether the law will be put on the agenda of the Kosovo parliament," saying that Serbia, in addition to making appeals and indicating to the problem, "can do little, other than the deputy prime minister reading out his report at the Security Council."

These reactions in Belgrade came after Haki Demoli, a minister in the Kosovo government, on Monday told the Committee on Internal Affairs said that the Ministry for the Kosovo Security Force had drafted a law that would transform this structure into "the Armed Forces of Kosovo," and that the draft would be sent to the government next week.
