Speaker visits Moscow, reiterates policy on sanctions

Gojkovic for her part noted that Serbia aspires toward EU membership and was "grateful to Russia for the support on that road."

She added that with Serbia's future EU membership, "Russia will gain a sincere friend and reliable partner in that organization."

"Our strategic decision will not be an obstacle to further development of relations with Russia," Gojkovic remarked, adding that Serbia "will never impose sanctions against Russia," because such measures "never bring with them any good, and do not contribute to solving problems."

She stressed that Serbia "supports territorial integrity and sovereignty of each UN member-state, and will not desist from that principle."

During the meeting at the Duma, head of the ruling United Russia deputy group Vladimir Vasilyev said that "a very complex, very responsible and unsafe historical period" is currently unfolding, and that it was "important to hear that Serbia will not change the principles of its relations with Russia."

During a separate meeting, Naryshkin stressed that relations between the two countries had reached a strategic level.

"We give high marks to the level of cooperation between Serbia and Russia," he noted, stressing that under the conditions of "an obvious crisis of trust in Europe" this was "very important."

According to Naryshkin, both countries always have and will continue to protect international law.

Gojkovic will continue her visit to Russia on Tuesday when she is scheduled to meet with the Federation Council Chairwoman Valentina Matviyenko.
