Belgrade-Zagreb flights reestablished after 23 years

The first flight between the two cities, at the time part of the same country, took place in 1928 and was carried out by JAT Airways' predecessor, Aeroput. JAT maintained the flights from 1947 until 1991. JAT was later renamed to Jat Airways, and in 2013 rebranded as Air Serbia.

The carrier now flies to four towns in Croatia: Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Split, and Pula.

Air Serbia General Director Dane Kondic said on Friday that Zagreb was the most important new regional destination.

"After 23 years, the air bridge between these two capitals will be established once again. We are proud to have the opportunity to contribute to closer ties between the two countries' populations and economies," he said.

Kondic noted he was convinced the air route will offer "greater travel choice and contribute to development of bilateral trade and tourism," and added that summer-season only routes to the three coastal towns in Croatia had 50,000 passengers this year alone.

The Air Serbia plane was welcomed in Zagreb with the traditional water canons salute, and the airport's general director, Bruno Mazurkiewicz, along with leading officials from the Croatian tourism sector and the local media.
