Ruling party MP asks if prosecution is "Serbian or American"

During question time, Drecun called on Parliament Speaker Maja Gojković and the Serbian parliament to determine whether Vekarić was legally appointed to the office, and asked what they will do to protect him.

“I cannot serve in an atmosphere of threats, slanders and lies. The Prosecutor's Office threatens me that it will institute a pre-trial procedure, it is trying to defame me linking me to the threats sent to the Prosecutor's Office," he said.

Commenting on "the great pressure that he is exposed to," Drecun also pointed to the letter that the Prosecutor's Office "sent to certain embassies in Belgrade accusing him that he might harm its operation."

“The Prosecutor's Office also denies the right of the president of the Committee on Kosovo and Metohija to request the presence of state bodies at the session, including the Prosecutor's Office, and ask for answers which are in their competence. I was appointed to the office by citizens, and not by ambassadors,” Drecun underlined, adding that this was "a scandal which constitutes an attack on parliament and the role it has as defined by the Constitution."

Drecun also said that the prosecutor's office have told a legal advisor with the U.S. embassy that they are "ready to meet once a month and talk in more detail about each individual case."

"Whose prosecution is it, American or Serbian?" Drecun asked.

He also asked if the war crimes prosecutor was directly authorized by the prosecution to contact ambassadors in this way and whether the Ministry of Interior (MUP) and the Security Information Agency (BIA) have been informed about it.

Drecun also wanted to know "when the prosecutor's office's spending of funds from the budget and donations the will be checked."

The Serbian parliament speaker asked Drecun to furnish any documentation he may have so she could respond to his questions within 15 days.

On November 20, Drecun said Vekari was holding the position unlawfully, as he was not elected by the Serbian parliament, but rather by the State Prosecutors' Council on December 15, 2009.

Vekarić replied that his election is legitimate and the claims presented by Drecun "preposterous," and "coming from one of the suspects in the "Media case" conducted by the War Crimes Prosecutor's Office.

Drecun then told Tanjug that Vekarić was "deceiving the public," because the deputy prosecutor, Dušan Knežević, had completed a preliminary investigation into the case and dismissed the criminal charges filed by the Independent Journalists' Association of Serbia (NUNS).
