Serbia "to work hard in EU accession process"

Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić and former European enlargement commissioner Gunter Verheugen discussed on Tuesday "the European future of Serbia."

According to a statement issued by the government, Vučić said that "Serbia would continue to work hard towards success in the EU accession process."

Vučić added that the government stood ready to implement a number of reform measures to achieve that end, the Serbian government's media relations office said in a release.

He stated that despite the enlargement fatigue, the European Union should see Serbia in its frameworks as a future member state whose position could contribute to economic stability and prosperity of the entire region, the release said.

Verheugen said that " the road to the European Union was not always easy, not only when it came to Serbia, but also other countries that had gone through the process, pointing to Greece and Romania as examples."

He said it was "important that the citizens of Serbia remained interested in the process to keep the momentum going."

Verheugen considers it important that Serbia "should stay on the European path and become part of the European family."

The former EU official on Monday attended a conference in Belgrade, dedicated to the Western Balkans and the EU.
