Tanasković believes that Serbia's policy in view of these developments would be based "on the strategic necessity of achieving as useful and as fair possible cooperation with this important and powerful country on the one hand, and protecting our long-term state and national interests from the neo-Ottoman reach, on the other."

He added that "there is no doubt that the active neo-Ottoman policy toward our region will continue, especially if Ahmet Davutogul becomes Turkey's new prime minister."

Asked whether there was a greater chance for Bosnia-Herzegovina to become a unitary state or for the Serb Repulic (RS) to achieve independence, Tanasković said that the state of Bosnia can exist only as a loose confederation of two or three ethnically defined entities.

"Any imposing of a different formula would lead to increased tensions, possible conflict and, ultimately, sooner or later, to the disintegration of the country," Tanasković, who will soon take over as Serbia's ambassador to UNESCO, concluded.
