He warned that the Serbian-Russian relations in the context of the EU are "complicated by the development of events in Ukraine, particularly after the signing of the South Stream gas pipeline agreement."

"It should not be a problem to have good relations with Russia. They are maintained by many large EU countries. But good relations with Russia cannot be contrary to the rules applicable in the EU," he noted.

Kukan believes that the recent signing of an agreement to build South Stream in Serbia came "in violation of agreements and rules of the EU."

"We told Aleksandar Vučić even before he became prime minister that we were upset by the range of cooperation between Serbia and Russia. He gave us all the assurances that he will make an effort so that this cooperation does not exceed the level beyond which it could harm Serbia's ambitions to join the EU," said Kukan.

This Slovak MEP also "stressed that it is necessary to constantly maintain a political dialogue," and that he "personally knows all leading Serbian representatives," and has "very open conversations" with them.
