Opposition party says it is "under police scrutiny"

DS leader Bojan Pajtić on Sunday called on DS members and sympathizers to join the upcoming union protests against the proposed amendments to the labor law, which the government filed to the parliament for adoption on urgent procedure.

The Democratic Party is not the organizer of any union activities, but it supports them, underlined Stefanović, adding that the government ignored the opinion of trade unions on the amendments to the labor law, instead of reaching an agreement with them.

He said that heads of several municipal DS boards informed him today that they were called to the police station for an interview concerning the role of DS in inciting its members to join union protests.

“Our members are under pressure. The party is under police scrutiny. This is outrageous and unheard of in Serbia since October 5 (2000),” Stefanović stressed.

Commenting on the donors' conference in Brussels, Stefanović said that he was happy to hear that Serbia received EUR 990 million, but urged the government to specify which portion of the funds are loans, and which are grants.

The way in which the information has been presented could lead to the false conclusion that the sum of nearly EUR 1 billion was given to Serbia as a gift, he noted.

MUP denies

No members or officials of any political party, including the Democratic Party (DS), have been questioned over their participation in trade union protests that were held in Belgrade on Thursday, the Serbian Interior Ministry (MUP) said in a release.

“At no time did the police in any police department in Serbia question any member or official of a political party, including the Democratic Party, regarding the participation in the union protests that were staged in Belgrade today,” the statement said.
