Bill on flood damage repair presented in parliament

Thanks to this law, all procedures, starting from the public procurement procedure, will be sped up, but remain transparent, the minister of transport, construction and infrastructure said.

She noted that all citizens whose houses were destroyed will get new ones by the autumn, and the infrastructure will be repaired by October 1.

“Certain delays may only be expected when tackling the landslides,” she noted.

The Belgrade-Bar railway, which sustained major damage, will be repaired in August, the minister specified.

She noted that the law envisages public works and public initiatives so as to repair the flood damage as quickly as possible, and stressed that the state should provide the accommodation, food for those who join the efforts and enable them to register this time in their employment record.

“We have a clear plan and we know what we need the money for,” Mihajlović said, adding that new locations have already been determined, as new houses cannot be built near the river beds and on landslides.

Responding to MPs' questions, Mihajlović warned that Serbia will have problems with energy security, and will certainly import electricity. “The energy sector has been the worst affected by the floods, as only the damage caused to the Kolubara mining basis exceeds EUR 100 million,” she said.

Mihajlović said that, after the bill is passed, the Serbian government will prepare a state program with clear criteria and measures for the flood damage repair process in all municipalities.

On Wednesday, Serbian MPs are also considering the report on floods that hit Serbia in May, which puts the total damage and losses at EUR 1.5 billion.
