Progressives support changes to labor law, "further reforms"

The meeting of the SNS Presidency also addressed the current political situation in the region, Gojković told a press conference.

The Progressives "stand firmly behind the proposed amendments to the labor law, and the SNS and the government that comprises several senior party officials remain committed to the economic reforms" - which, she noted, were due back in 2000 but for "lack of courage” were never carried out.

"This law is intended to protect the workers and their rights, the employers who want to create new jobs, but it is also passed in the interest of young people as it will allow them to find employment more quickly and easily," Gojković explained.

Serbian government adopted on Saturday the draft laws on labor and pension and disability insurance, and Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić underlined that the government had set a new and modern labor law that favors "the young and quality workers."

Trade unions believe the law is detrimental to workers and will organize protests.

Gojković, who serves as Serbian Parliament speaker, called an extraordinary parliament session for Tuesday, July 15, which will be dedicated to the debate on new amendments to the law on labor.

The agenda of the session, called at the request of the government, will also include amendments to the law on pension and disability insurance, as well as the bill on flood damage restoration in Serbia and the report on natural disaster, concerning the floods that hit Serbia in May.
