Kosovo assembly to be dissolved on Wednesday - report

Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga announced that she will once again meet with political leaders tomorrow, while Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said his proposal was to go to the polls on June 8.

On Tuesday, the assembly in Priština interrupted its work after it transpired that government's amendment to the constitution and a draft law to transform the Kosovo Security Forces into a Kosovo army could not be adopted without the participation of Serb minority deputies.

These deputies explained that they would continue to boycott the work of the assembly on Tuesday as well, considering that they received no reply on whether minority communities would have guarantees seats in the new assembly as well.

Earlier in the day, Thaci announced that the voting on a proposal to set up Kosovo's army and on reserved seats would be "left to the new composition of parliament."

"A parliament that cannot establish an own army has no reason to exist," he remarked during a news conference with EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule.

According to Thaci, the vote was not taken already "because of the election fever of several parties."
