The bodies of a three-year-old girl and an 11-month-old boy who on Wednesday drowned in the Turija River in southeastern Serbia were found on Thursday.

Bodies of children that drowned in river recovered

The girl was found first, some 200 to 300 meters away from the place where she drowned, while her brother's body surfaced about a kilometer downstream.

They were from the village of Bankovac near Aleksinac and are considered the first victims of the current flooding in Serbia.

The tragedy occurred yesterday when the children were taken out for a walk by their mother. The 3-year-old fell into the river fist. The mother, who attemted to pull her out of the water, also fell in with the younger child in her arms.

The woman was rescued by a passer-by.

The police and the prosecution carried out an investigation and ruled out the possibility that the cause of death may have been deliberate or violent, concluding that the children died as a result of an accident.
