His comments came as SNS leader Aleksandar Vučić told his party on Tuesday that he had invited the Socialists to join his future cabinet.

"We are not in a position to determine who will form the government, but we are in a position to decide whether we wish to participate," Tadić said when asked "if Miodrag Rakić ​​could join the cabinet, while the NDS formally would not be a part of the ruling coalition."

According to the former Serbian president, a government that would include the Socialists would obstruct the policy advocated by the NDS. Tadić added that the election result gave Aleksandar Vučić the legitimacy to form a government.

Asked whether Rakić ​​and Dušan Petrović were in favor of "participating without putting forward many conditions" Tadić said this was not true, and that there was "a high level of unity" within his party and among its coalition partners, including the decision not to join together with the SPS.

The reason for this, said he, was that the SPS "inflicted huge damage to all sectors that were under their jurisdiction."

"They have been wasting social resources mercilessly in the way in which they ran the ministries and public sector enterprises, and that is the best testimony as to the character of the party. "

Tadić then commented on his own cooperation with the Socialists in 2008, when the Democratic (DS), led by him at the time, formed a coalition government with the SPS. According to him, that was necessary in order to establish a national consensus on strategic goals of Serbia's European future and a peaceful solution to the Kosovo problem.

"Today, when a consensus is reached, there is no justification for their entry into the government. Serbia faces the challenge of implementing necessary reforms, of which the SPS is simply not capable," said Tadić.
