Police cooperation in region "ahead of political ties"

There can be no successful fight against crime, nor can there be regional stability and security without strong ties between police services and Ministries of Interior Affairs in the region, Dačić said at a ministerial conference on contemporary challenges in regional police cooperation held in the Croatian town of Opatija.

This year, the focus of the conference rests on new modes of cooperation, Dačić said and pointed to the idea concerning a new level of operative cooperation that would make room for exchange of police information and data.

This calls for a good data protection system, and the aim is to sign multilateral agreements that would make room for exchange of DNA data between police services in the region which could prove highly important in the fight against crime, he said.

Dačić noted that Serbia has made considerable progress in the area and is now one of the countries which have already qualified for EU membership, and recalled that the country signed the agreement on operative cooperation with Europol in January.

This means that we have built institutions and a data protection system which enable us to use Europol database and guarantee its absolute protection, he underscored.

Dačić expressed gratitude to the conference organisers who made it possible for important topics to be addressed at such meetings, such as the issues of cooperation between border police in border protection, prevention of crime spreading from one country to another, prevention of illegal migration and various other modes of crime such as human trafficking, weapon smuggling and similar.

This year, all heads of border police departments from South-East European countries will file the reports on their work, Dačić said pointing to the importance of special modes of cooperation between police services in the region such as joint patrols, joint investigative teams, joint implementation of special investigative methods and the like.

Dačić is participating at the 11th meeting of the PCC SEE Committee of Ministers and the 10th DCAF Annual Ministerial Review Conference on Border Security in South-East Europe.
