Serbia's stance on Ukraine "not topic in Brussels on Monday"

"This is not an issue that should be discussed in the dialogue, but our position on this is well known," she told reporters in Brussels ahead of the 23rd round of the Kosovo talks.

Kocijančić explained that the EU has called upon all third countries and candidates to join its stance, stating that this was "important also in the accession process context."

"It is clearly stated that views on foreign policy need to be harmonized with those of the EU, but in the end it's up to each country individually," the spokesperson was quoted as saying. She recalled that the Serbian foreign policy will be evaluated in the annual report of the European Commission in October.

The media in Belgrade last week said that Western countries are asking the future minister, Aleksandar Vučić, that Serbia joins the EU and impose "sanctions against Russia because of the crisis in Crimea." According to the daily Večernje Novosti, it was expected that diplomatic pressure would reach its peak precisely during today's round of the dialogue.

"Specifically, the Serbian government is being asked to join in the form of a statement Brussels and Washington in the public condemnation of the Kremlin, but also in formal moves the EU and America will undertake against the authorities of Russian President Vladimir Putin," according to the newspaper.

On the other hand, the Naše Novine newspaper reported over the weekend, citing diplomatic sources, that Russia would react strongly if Serbia were to accept even a single measure of the EU aimed against Moscow.
