"No, I do not think that my resignation is a way out of this situation... I'll stay until the end to defend the stability and security of the country," said Izetbegović when asked directly whether he would resign "if the people ask him to."

Croat member and chair of the Presidency Željko Komšić, however, said he would step down "if the people so requested."

"Yes, I would resign. Trust me, and it seems to me I would do it with a sense of relief, if you can believe me, with a sense of serious relief," said Komšić, according to a report in Sarajevo's Dnevni Avaz.

Meanwhile another protest in Sarajevo ended on Sunday night, after participants spent the day blocking several streets in the city.

Some 1,000 protesters, many of them youths wearing masks, gathered in front of the Presidency of Bosnia-Herzegovina demanding the resignation of the government, "and a more just society."

They heard a proclamation which announces that peaceful protests in Sarajevo will continue, asks politicians to recognize "that this is a rebellion of the people," announces the establishment of the Plenum of the Citizens of Sarajevo and gives support to protests in all other towns in Bosnia.

The protesters demanded an increase in the minimum pension to 400 convertible marks, and end to borrowing from the IMF, and of increases of prices of utilities.

The protesters, in addition to demands for "the resignation of the government on all levels," yesterday mostly sought the release from custody of the youth arrested during the rioting on Friday, when the buildings of the Presidency and the Sarajevo Canton were set on fire. A police official addressed the protest on Sunday to say that all those detained had been released.
